  • Giving all Diligence to assure our entrance into God's kingdom

Introduction:   This is the month River of Life is studying 2 Peter. This is also a time when there is a lot of publicity for a book by a local pastor that seems to be saying we really don't have to worry about whether or not there is an eternal hell for most folks....God will make a way somehow...even after death.

I am not even naming the book because I, for one , do not want to give it any more publicity than it is already getting.

What follows below is basically WORD.

The only thing you need to  receive what follows is a belief that the Bible is infallible -- that it contains God's Word. If you don't believe that; well, you will probably like the book that I was just referring to better than you like the Bible.......

I am starting with truths from 2 Peter here and at the end have some of the verses that discuss hell for those who do not adhere to God's plan for salvation.

Making sure we attain that abundant entrance into the kingdom when Jesus comes again and Making sure we do not end up in hell due to carelessness !  We must be  ”giving all diligence” in building ourselves up in Christ!

    2 Pet 1:1               Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:2              Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:4             Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.5     And beside this, giving all diligence,  {dictionary.com : diligence: constant and earnest effort to accomplish what is undertaken; persistent exertion of body or mind}

add to your faith virtue;    ………………………………………… and to virtue knowledge;’………………….6      And to knowledge temperance;……………………….and to temperance patience;                             and to patience godliness;                                                7                And to godliness brotherly kindness;                      and to brotherly kindness charity.     8     For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.9    But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

The prize  awaiting us  the end of it all  if we are fruitful in Christ?  The abundant entrance into the everlasting kingdom of Christ!

2 Pet 1:10            Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:11       For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

False teaching can  rob us from this  prize! We could follow these teachers all the way into their damnation!

2 Pet 2:1              But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.2     And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 3                And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

Know  that the Lord will surely punish rebellion!

2 Peter 2:4          For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;5          And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;6             And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;7            And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:8           (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)9        The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:  10     But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.11           Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord.12              But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;13     And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you;14         Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:15       Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;16           But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man's voice forbad the madness of the prophet.17               These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.18             For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.19           While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. 20      For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.21               For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.22     But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

Scoffers: Beware of listening to them!  A scoffer is someone who jeers at and makes fun of God’s Word and promises!

    From Dictionary.com:  —Synonyms
    1. gibe. Scoff, jeer, sneer  imply behaving with scornful disapproval toward someone or about something. To scoff  is to express insolent doubt or derision, openly and emphatically: to scoff at a new invention. To jeer  suggests expressing disapproval and scorn more loudly, coarsely, and unintelligently than in scoffing: The crowd jeered when the batter struck out. To sneer  is to show by facial expression or tone of voice ill-natured contempt or disparagement: He sneered unpleasantly in referring to his opponent's misfortunes. —Antonyms
    3.  praise.

Notice what the scoffer wants: “walking after their own lusts”.  Don’t tell me what to do is their attitude – I do not want to become as God wants me to be. I want to do my own thing.

2 Pet 3:3               Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,4                And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for   the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:6          Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:7            But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. 8           But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.9               The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.10  But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.11              Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,12        Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?13            Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. 14    Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

Peter says, “I am warning you what to look out for, so BEWARE! Don’t be fooled by their false teachings!”

2 Pet 3: 17           Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.18                But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

If we don’t KNOW the Word and  are not in communion with the Spirit – if we do not grow in knowledge and in grace, we CAN be fooled!!!!

2 Tim 2:15            Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.16               But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness……….19                Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

We must diligently , as it says in the book of 2 Peter, make our calling and election SURE.   To fall away from God has dire consequences we need to avoid!!

Heb 10: 26           For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,27          But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.28   He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:29          Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?30                For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.31    It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Some are teaching right now that God would not judge someone worthy of hell.

    Matt 13: 37         He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;

38           The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;39  The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. 40                As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.41         The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;42          And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. 43          Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.(KJV)

Rev 20: 11            And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.12              And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.13        And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.14                And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.15    And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Rev 3: 5                He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

Rev. 22: 14          Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. 15            For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.16      I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.17   And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.18       For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:19              And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

II Th 1: 7               And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,8                In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:9          Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;10     When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.(KJV)

Rev 21: 6              And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.7        He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.8              But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Rev 21: 23            And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.24        And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.25     And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.26             And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.27            And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

Some also say that being in Christ is “a way” to God , not the ONLY way – the Bible says He is the ONLY way to the Father!

John 14:6             Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Mark 16: 16         He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Acts 4: 10             Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.11           This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.12              Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.(KJV)

  • Nature and ways of Holy Spirit continued 3 26 11

Nature and Work of Holy Spirit in us (this lesson is not exhaustive by any means!)

    Passages covered before 3 26 11

    The comforter, teacher

John 14: 16            And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;17     Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.18          I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.19           Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.20           At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.21       He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.22    Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?23      Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.24        He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.25   These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. 26         But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.27      Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.(KJV)

What the Spirit will lead us to do and be

Isa 61:1      The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;2  To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;3        To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.(KJV)

    Start here on 3 26 11:

The Holy Spirit within us helps us keep the ways of God.  We are given His Spirit so that we will walk in His ways so that He can be our God and we can be His people.

Ezek 11:19 And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:20          That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.

Ezek 36: 24            For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.25   Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.26  A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.27      And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.28     And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.(KJV)

Rom 8: 4    That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.5       For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.6         For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.7      Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.8           So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.9         But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.10         And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.11   But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

Gal 5: 16    This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh…..17  For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. ….22        But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,23     Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.24      And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.25            If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

1Thes 5: 23            And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.24        Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

The Holy Spirit is pictured as water. Water brings life and refreshing.

John 7: 37  In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.38        He that believeth on me, as the yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

When God’s Spirit is  Poured out upon us, it results in supernatural communication from God to and through us!:
Acts 2: 17  And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

God’s Spirit wants to bring a FAMILY to the Father….He wants to assure us we are sons of God! He wants God’s family to be unified.

Rom 8: 13  For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.14        For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.15     For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.16    The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:(KJV)

Gal 4:6       And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.7     Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

    1Corinthians 12:13

For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether [we be] Jews or Gentiles, whether [we be] bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

Eph 2:16    And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

17  And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.18      For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

19  Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;20    And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;21     In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:22       In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Eph 4: 3     Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.4      There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;5    One Lord, one faith, one baptism,6    One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

1 Cor 12: 13          For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is GRIEVED when we do not deal with each other according to His nature:

Eph 4: 29   Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.30     And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.31      Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:32           And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.(KJV)

God’s Spirit helps us pray according to God;s will.

Rom 8: 26  Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.27      And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

When we are used to speak the Word, God’s  Spirit will be manifested  -- we will  sense and see His power.

1 Cor 2: 3  And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.4        And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:5      That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

The Spirit of God teaches us the deep spiritual things of God.

1 Cor 2: 9  But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.11           For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.12       Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.13  Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.14     But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.15    But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.16     For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

The presence of the Spirit within us means our bodies are literally the temple of God.

1 Cor 3: 16            Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.(KJV)

The Spirit of God sanctifies and justifies us.

From Dictionary .com:   Sanctify:  1.to make holy; set apart as sacred; consecrate.

    2. to purify or free from sin: Sanctify your hearts.

Justify:  Theology . to declare innocent or guiltless; absolve; acquit.

1 Cor 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.(KJV)

The Holy Spirit reveals the Lordship of Jesus Christ to us.

1 Cor 12: 3            Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

The Holy Spirit in us is the proof, the certainty , that our full inheritance of all God’s promises are true and will continue to come to us now and forever.

2 Cor 1:.21            Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;22    Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.( RB the downpayment, the guarantee)

Eph 1: 13   In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.(KJV)

The Holy Spirit transforms the letter of the Word into revelation knowledge. Revelation knowledge takes us out of the bondage of  the hopelessness of trying to keep God’s ways in our own power , i.e., “in the flesh”, and liberates us to become in constant communion with and therefore enpowered by the Spirit. We are free from enslavement to the works of the flesh and to walk in the ways of the Spirit. Communing with and walking in Him takes us from one level of His glory to the next.  He progressively reveals things to us .2 Cor 3: 14  But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.15        But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.16         Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.17     Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.18  But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.(KJV)

“Liberty”: Unrestrained, free, freedom from obligaton

Eph 1: 17   That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:18         The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,19        And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power

Eph 3: 16   That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,18      May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;19   And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. 20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,21  Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

When we are filled with the Spirit , we will be full of the Word, worship , and thanksgiving!

    Eph 5: 18   And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;19       Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;20      Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

    The Word and praying in the Spirit are weapons for spiritual warfare:   Eph 6: 17       And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God  18      Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

We must never suppress His influence on our hearts or ignore that which he leads us to do or to say!

1Thes 5:19 Quench not the Spirit.

The Spirit prophesies of things to come:

1 Tim 4:1   Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;(KJV)

Rev 2: 7     He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.(KJV)

The nature of His Spirit within us is POWER, LOVE, and a SOUND MIND. We have this when we die to our flesh and submit to His Spirit in us because HE is power, love, and surely has a sound mind, the mind of Christ! He enables us to withstand all the persecution that will come from being in Him.

    2 Tim 1: 7  For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.8      Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

He is WITH US in our spirit:

2 Tim 4: 22            The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.

The enemy will pretend he is the Holy Spirit so be sure to listen carefully and discern with wisdom the nature of the “spirit “ speaking to you.

I Jn 4:1       Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.2   Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:3         And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.4    Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

    2   Corinthians 11:13

For such [are] false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.

    2Cr 11:14

And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

    2Cr 11:15

Therefore [it is] no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

The Spirit is looking forward to our receiving our rest in the next age:

Rev 14: 13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.(KJV)

He invites us and welcomes us to the water of life flowing from the throne of God.  Rev 22:1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb…… 16         I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.17     And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

  • WORD MINISTRY SCHOOL PAPER EDITING PART ONE

River of Life Word Ministry School (ROLWMS) (revised 3/11

Pastor Dr. Rosemary Barnes is the  founder and director  of the school (which began in the early 1980’s)..  ‘The purpose of the school is to train those called to be   a  fivefold minister, commonly also called a “Word minister” by us. People can be called to one, some, or all of these ministry positions.   Five fold ministry positions and their purpose are listed in Ephesians 4: 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Who may receive Word ministry training in the River of Life Word Ministry School?

Those  who  demonstrate a  calling  to the Word Ministry:
‘The director,( with input sought by Rosemary from Pastor  Robert  as well  as the other
Associate Ministers at River of  Life), will  decide whether it is appropriate for  someone to enter the Word Ministry school. People called to the Word ministry will clearly demonstrate that calling
before they enter the school.       We will acknowledge  a person’s ministry calling
when we see him doing  things that those in that calling  do..   When someone begins to act like a  Word minister,  we want him to be trained to perfect that calling on his life.  We cannot "make" anyone a Word minister. Individuals must be called  by the Lord Himself to that ministry. But we can surely recognize the calling and train them accordingly.
Quite naturally some may sense  they are called to this ministry and ask Rosemary about being in the school. Or, Rosemary may see the potential in someone  and suggest they pray about being trained.  Either way, the characteristics listed below  must be demonstrated before a person enters the process
towards becoming a Word Minister at River of Life.

The characteristics listed below do not have to be perfectly formed in that person; they just have to be present at some good, recognizable  level.  All of us in the ministry continue to be perfected in the listed areas.

People  can be called and chosen by God  for a ministry ;however, their faithful, obedient response to God’s call on their life  will determine whether or not the person ever becomes an effective  Word minister.

Because Rosemary does the vast majority of the training, the person must be able to receive and respect input from her.  He must be entreatable. He must handle   evaluations and  critiques as gifts not as reason to give the impression that he is  being  treated badly when he is  corrected and directed.

Previous ministry  experience – although valuable and  worthy of respect ---  takes a back seat to current behavior at River of Life.  A person may have been a pastor for years ; however, how he conducts himself at our local church at the present time  is what determines how  he is recognized  (or not)  among  us as a minister.  The vision, beliefs, and practices in  every local church are different.  Each minister among us must harmonize with River of Life no matter how much they did at another church.

If someone is genuinely called to be a Word minister, in time that will become very obvious to us all.

It is possible to have a strong calling to  local church ministry  but be in the wrong church  for that calling to come forth. E.g., someone could be called to be a pastor to a church filled with  migrant workers; but, they could not successfully be  part of the pastoral team at a large , Assembly of God church.   Some can minister better in churches with formal liturgies.  Some could not possibly conform to a list of prescribed activities in  the handbook of a certain  denomination.. Someone could be a member of River of Life and be a five fold minister without having that role at church. He could be a jail chaplain or the head of a parachurch minister. I.e., not all ministers among us necessarily  automatically become  a part of our ministerial team here.  People who  we want to be a part of our ministry team (and if  they want that too)   need to be trained here so as to know what the specific River of Life  ministry vision and protocol. He cannot come to River of Life with his own vision for what we should be and then work at imposing that vision on us! . Nor can he just start doing his own ministry  thing at River of Life  without being willing to harmonize with that which is already in place.

Furthermore, there are those who see themselves as ministers and have even done some blessed ministry; but , they have never truly, systematically studied the entire Bible.  This presents the danger of not knowing the Word well enough to teach it to others!

Historically, in special cases,  we have  provisionally given credentials to a minister while they both have a ministry  here and are still  in the school. The permanent credentials are then given when the school is completed.

Characteristics of people called into five fold

    1.   He must love the Lord and act upon this love by consistently -- usually daily -- spending
time with Him in Word, prayer, and worship.

    2.    He must love to share what the Lord is saying. Others  must recognize that  he has something valuable to share.   A good part  of our  recognition   that someone is called to becoming a Word Minister comes from our receiving their regular, enthusiastic sharing with us in the "open pulpit" times.   Everyone who is called to be a Word Minister is eager, grateful ,  and happy to have the opportunity to share God's Word and ways with the people! Being “too shy” to stand in the pulpit must be overcome before training takes place. His words must be Biblically sound.   He will be able to connect with the minds and hearts of the people while effectively communicating   a clear message.  People will understand what he is saying -- both because the content is clear and because he is making the effort to project his voice and to carefully enunciate his words. He will obediently, cheerfully conform to the open pulpit time frames and, if appropriate, he will harmonize with appropriate subjects or special event themes. He   will love to bring people to the Lord, not to draw people unto himself instead of to the Lord...

    3.  He will love to see others come to and grow up into Christ. This love will manifest itself clearly in his freely  relating the things of the Lord  to  unbelievers, visitors,  and fellow River of Life members     in order to minister salvation, edification, exhortation and comfort to all.
    4.  He wants each saint exercised in and perfected for all the work of the ministry that
    is appropriate for that person.
He is thrilled, not threatened, when others flourish in ministry.

    5.    He wants   to be with the people of God each time they get together at their local church and loves to serve others with whatever gifts he has to give them. His priorities are in order; therefore,  any absences from church are for excellent reasons...
    6.  He is recognized as a leader by all with discernment. Those called to be a minister of the Word, the five fold ministry,  are leaders.   Normally leaders have followers.  People listen carefully and respectfully to leaders when they are speaking on spiritual topics. People seek out leaders for guidance and for prayer.  . A person who has been given leadership ability by the Lord does not need a “position” in order to be accepted a leader. He just is one.  He is only a good leader if he can submit to authority.

    7.  His faithfulness can be clearly seen by the use of his time, money, and energy. He gives tithes, offerings, and alms. He is not lazy in any area of his life. He has a good reputation at church and in the community. He is a man of integrity. No one need wonder what “mood” he will be in each time he comes. He is consistent in the showing forth of the  fruit  of the Holy Spirit.

     8. He is saved, baptized in water, and baptized in the Holy Spirit. He believes in the present day manifestations of the gifts of the Spirit.  When the Spirit of the Lord moves in a special way  in a service, he is happy . He covets to prophesy and does so when given a word from the Lord. He is willing to grow into participating in  the supernatural works of God. He is willing to cast out demons and pray for the sick. He  prays in the Spirit in tongues.  He is bold. He is not ashamed of the gospel or of the Holy Spirit’s works.

    9. He relates in purity and love to   all ages, economic levels,  and  races of people as well as to both genders.   He discerns the whole body of Christ and is happy to relate to everyone! He sees no man as beyond the hope of becoming a Christian and willingly testifies whenever the door opens to do so.

    10. He is passionate about the Lord coming back for a Bride who has made herself ready for the Bridegroom  and is willing to do whatever He can to help the Bride get ready to meet the Lord Jesus Christ when He returns to earth again!

  • Thoughts on Lady Gaga

In this post, I , Rosemary , am responding to  the Press review on  Lady Gaga’s  Performance last night here in Grand Rapids.

Near the end, I include what I wrote into the Press   as a response to their review.

I actually want to challenge every Christian reading this: Would you be willing – in a conversation at work – to say the same things I wrote in my review? Do you agree with what I wrote?  Would you be willing to take all the “persecution” from the “enlightened”, “free” people who think Christians are ignorant and prudish  when we  judge negatively  the work of Gaga?  Would you be willing  endure the disgust of your kids (or youth at your church) who think you “know nothing” if you think it is wrong to admire Gaga  and  to  listen to her music?

The Grand Rapids Press Review:…Lady Gaga unleashes show with out of this world weirdness for Grand Rapids fans;   Published: Wednesday, March 02, 2011, 1:50 AM     Updated: Wednesday, March 02, 2011, 7:44 AM;    By John Sinkevics | The Grand Rapids Press
Lady Gaga demonstrated in daring, freakish fashion Tuesday night that she's out of this world.

I mean, quite literally, out of this world.

This flamboyantly peculiar creature from a distant planet – obviously, something far outside this galaxy – apparently was transported here via a shimmering pod a la “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.”

Now, I didn't see that pod on stage during her concert at Grand Rapids' Van Andel Arena, but I hear tell it landed in Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago during the Grammy Awards show.

Because seriously, no one from our solar system could generate the sort of bizarre spectacle that included:

    A) Lady Gaga sporting a naughty, see-through nun outfit while gyrating with other dancers inside a silver subway car bound for “Glitter Way” as fog wafted across the stage;

    B) The singer-pianist playing an Elton John-like “You and I” while an upside-down flame tornado spiraled up from her grand piano;

    C) With a strange fringe mask covering her face, Lady Gaga getting assaulted by hungry monsters (yes, during “Monster”) and emerging from the attack drenched in blood;

    D) The singer, while dressed like a tree, confronting a scary “fame monster” with tentacles and enormous teeth (probably an inter-galactic stowaway in her pod), before closing out the song “Paparazzi” with sparks shooting from her breasts and crotch.

    2.5 OUT OF 4 STARS

Highlight No. 1: Lady Gaga dynamically crooning “You and I” while playing behind a flaming grand piano.

Highlight No. 2: “Teeth,” with its driving rock under-current, showing off the singer's impressive vocal range.

Low point: A tie between the aggravating mini-intermissions between some songs, the silly crotch-grabbing of “Boys Boys Boys,” and the profane interlude during “LoveGame.”

Time on stage: 1 hour, 44 minutes for Lady Gaga (not counting those mini-intermissions), 30 minutes for Scissor Sisters

And really now, could anything but an alien being with mysterious, hypnotic powers entrance a capacity throng of 11,000 or so delirious, dance-crazed humans the way this Lady Gaga did on Tuesday night – not to mention getting a scary bunch of them (girls and boys) to dress JUST LIKE HER as she led them on a search for the Monster Ball, aka “the greatest party” on the planet?

Regardless of her true origins, the boundary-pushing, pop culture-shaping Lady Gaga – who made the cover of Billboard and Vogue the same week – may have out-Gaga'd herself in the seventh show of the latest leg of her much-hyped Monster Ball Tour.

After an engaging and campy half-hour, rock-hued opening dance set by the Scissor Sisters, Lady Gaga opened the curtain on her own energetic, dance-pop show with “Dance in the Dark.” She then spent an hour and 45 minutes preaching to the converted: fans who clearly adore everything about this singer, dancer and keyboardist.

Many of Lady Gaga's songs – from “Just Dance” and “The Fame” to “Bad Romance” and her latest single, “Born This Way,” which ended the show – have this haven't-I-heard-this-somewhere-before quality. They somehow link all the dance-drenched pop of the past quarter-century and spark sing-alongs.

Still, that music also seemed to play second fiddle in a show overshadowed by elaborate production, sex, Broadway-style theater, glamour, lighting and, well, weirdness.

Now, make no mistake, Lady Gaga's also an extraordinary singer – something she proved during renditions of “You and I” and “Teeth.” And she's a clever songwriter with classical training who I'm confident could keep a crowd spellbound if she spent the entire night stationed at her grand piano.

She didn't do that, of course, because this obviously was more than a concert. It was a grandiose production, an event intended as a crazy-fun night and a feel-good experience for her fans.

Because as an eccentric magnification of Madonna, Lady Gaga has been hailed as the messiah of pop.

Certainly, she's become an empowering presence for many women, gays, advocates of self-expression and all of her “Little Monster” fans, even if she sends out a mess of mixed messages with conflicting statements and unnecessary lewdness.

The same singer who commendably touts equality, decries bullying and urges fans to stay true to themselves – exclaiming in inspiring fashion, “You can be whoever it is that you want to be” – turns around just a few seconds later and declares, “I hate the truth.”

The same international superstar (winging her way to Paris after Tuesday's concert “to walk for the first time in a fashion show”) who proclaims, “I hate money,” also charges some pretty outrageous prices for tickets to her lavish shows.
To be sure, Lady Gaga's Monster Ball was an eye-catching exhibition: an offbeat and off-color three-ring circus, or maybe, a sticky dessert heavy on whipping cream, cherries and bucketloads of oozing chocolate syrup.

And truly, a spectacle out of this world.

    ----------------------end of review------------------------------------------

Here are some of the reader comments in response to the review. Because no one likes to be called “old”, “stupid”, or a “prude”, many could be intimidated into simply keeping their thoughts to themselves! Let’s not give in to “fear of man”!

“This journalist doesn't impress me. If he couldn't even understand that Lady Gaga's "I hate the Truth" comment was meant sarcastically, what the hell else did he miss? To miss that shows someone who is either just absolutely refuses to say anything decent about this powerful woman or is simply woefully stupid.”

“STINK a vicks should stick to the Lawrence Welk show. His review is a series of complaints trying to support his preconceived opinion. I am no Lady GaGa fan but this review was like a review of rap at the old folks home.”

“All you prude, West Michigan people who think with one brain can talk all you want about how horrible she is. She stole the show last night. That was the loudest concert I've ever been too at the Van Andel and I've seen some good shows there. SHE. STOLE. THE. SHOW. Go back into your holes now West Michigan. Your closed minds don't deserve to speak on her.”

End of the responses  from readers other than me.

Here is what I, Rosemary, posted today:

rbarnesrol March 02, 2011 at 1:46PM  Christians who understand spiritual warfare know the only One who can help Gaga out of her current bondage to the devil! E.g., Gaga spoke about her relationship with "fame" in an interview recently. She sees herself as creatively causing fame for herself. In the performance last night she was confronted with a scary "fame monster". I believe that was a representation of an actual demon that now torments her. The devil will make us believe we have a certain area (e.g., the establishment of fame) under our control until we are entirely seduced by him, then he takes control ( in the same way a pimp seduces and then controls a prostitute). Gaga needs deliverance from not only that "fame demon", but many other demons as well. It is sad that she (or a demon speaking through her?) would say, "I hate truth". The Truth, the Lord Jesus Christ, could use her God given talents for music to comfort and bless millions if she would but repent and turn to Him. God saved the Christian- murdering Saul -- whose name was changed to Paul and he wrote much of the New Testament. He is able to save Gaga too! I pray for a swift , miraculous conversion for Gaga ! I pray that God's loving voice whispers to her heart, "What profit a man if he gains the world but loses his soul?"
The millions who adore her could also receive an intrusion into their body and soul from those same kinds of demons aiming for the destruction of the young lady, Gaga . Her fans will then need deliverance too.
I surely hope that no one calling themselves "Christian" embraced and enjoyed Gaga's evil performance last night! And I pray that Grand Rapids repents for having her here and is cleansed from the defilement of her performance.
I, in the '60's, was a dope smoking, "free love" proclaiming "flower child" in San Francisco . I experienced the path from being seduced by the deceitfulness of sin to bondage to the demons who seduced me. Now , in Christ, I am free. I want to see everyone be free. The devil's job is to "steal, kill, and destroy"; the Lord says He came to give us an "abundant life" -- one of righteousness , peace, and joy. The pain of the bondage is simply not worth the short season of sinful "fun". The thought that some will never get free but continue on to hell is too horrifying to imagine!
    Pastor Dr. Rosemary L. Barnes

End of post to GR Press

Is my post true? Could it help someone? Will it be viewed as “Hate mail”?

Or, will there be a stunned silence because 99.9 % of the readers have NO CLUE what I am talking about; therefore, let it remain invisible…..

One thing I want to ask Christians: Is it appropriate for a Christian to have Gaga listed  on their social networking sites as one of their favorite artists?

  • youth seminbar material for 2 20 11 conflict resolutions part 2

Our last    Youth Seminar was on  Sunday, 11 21 10:  Learning to confidently face, sort through, and discuss challenging topics.  by Pastor Dr. Rosemary Barnes

In November, we did a debate, we had a minister (Bruce J ) do an exaggerated speech demonstrating all the “wrong “ ways to persuade.  We had wonderful small group discussions. But, there was a lot we still wanted to do.

We  have the “plans”  for this second seminar written below; HOWEVER, if a given exercise proves to be so “rich” that we keep building and building on it, another exercise  may go to the wayside.

FYI:  The next youth seminar,  Sunday, 6 12 11, :  The next topic will be “Being Pentecostal TODAY” .    We will include historical Pentecostal things and   research on various things the Lord is doing around the world that demonstrate that the Pentecostal experience is alive and well right now.
We will discuss what makes Pentecostals different than those who are not .  What should ROL be doing to keep from “neglecting” the “gifts” that have been given to us  as Pentecostals.   And what our CURRENT GOAL should  be  that is beyond the initial Pentecostal experience.

But, there is a lot of material left over from before that there was no time to cover – hence:  Part 2 of Learning to confidently face, sort through, and discuss challenging topics.

Location:  We will have the entire seminar at Quality Inn in the big meeting room there (at 2171 Holton Court, N.W. in Walker).

Childcare for staff children and for children of the parents of the youth in a guest room with Leslie Brown.:  These children, 11 and under, may use the pool until 3:30 PM.  After that, it is time for those 12 and up to be in there – ROL little ones are done.  Parents: YOU are responsible for these children at 3:30 PM and on.

Food:  This time there will be not be food, drinks, or eating supplies provided.  The hotel is right by Mc Donald’s and Bob Evans for anyone who wants to go to lunch and/or supper at a restaurant.  Or, people can bring their own food, drink, and eating supplies in order to eat right in the meeting room.

Offering:  The expense for this will be around 200.00 – this is for the 2 rooms and whatever paperwork we hand out.   (Not providing food cuts down on a lot of the expense this time.) Please give an offering at church if you have youth(s) coming to the seminar.   I am thinking at least 10.00 per PH or KYF child is a good start.  IF you have a little one having a wonderful time in the pool, it would be nice to give an offering for that too. (Disregard the offering request if you are a childcare worker, presenter, or end up having a big role in the work of the seminar.) You can give the offering in a regular service time.

Quality Inn fun time (swimming and games) for seminar participants, workers, parents of the youth --After the seminar: Everyone 12 and up can use the pool or play games (bring board games).  Parents, remember you are first of all responsible to care for your small children during this time.

Supper:  Let’s all break for  supper at around the same time, i.e., around 5:30 P.M. (although some can “guard” the things in the big room awaiting the others to return if no one chooses to eat there).  After supper we can continue to play together if desired; however, the official leaving time is 8:00 P.M.    BRING BOARD GAMES

Baptism:  Robert Brown expressed a desire to be baptized. The motel owner gave permission for some of us to gather around him to discreetly do that in their pool we could do that in the early evening sometime. ( Or…We will weigh what the best time is according to how many guests are around the pool.)

Time frames:  We are being given access to both rooms at 9 AM : HOWEVER, the seminar does not start until  10:15 AM. If you are responsible for set up , childcare, or any kind of preparation, please be there early enough to do so!  I , Rosemary , will be there at 9:30 AM.

Time frames:  Other than 10:15 and 3:30, time frames are  a basic guideline – some parts could be shorter, some longer…..

10:15  TO  11:  Pastor Theresa Bolthouse: The use and misuse of logic in arguments

       11:00— 11:15  break

11: 15 to noon :   Rosemary  reviews goals very quickly  (around 5 minutes or so) just to remind us all of what we covered before.  Then, the introduction and start of the “Ask the Student” exercise.

We have the same goals as those of the first seminar:

--Learning truth is more important than being right or winning an argument

--To learn to  freely express one’s own  “opinion” based on knowledge/wisdom accumulated thus far.

-- To be able to be challenged in one’s own opinion and to receive the challenge as a gift advancing one to further study and, therefore, further enlightenment.

-- To be able to be shown to be right or wrong with no manifestation of wrongful pride in either case.

-- To be able to “argue” one’s point without relying on one’s own charisma, popularity, intimidation techniques, joke attempts, or anything that would cloud the straight forward “speaking the truth in love”.

-- To be able to understand how complicated some issues are and to realize that to dismiss a topic because it is too “busy, deep, involved, etc.” is ignorant. To know that some issues may take a very long time to study out and obtain a wise, knowledgeable response.

--  be willing to learn to take the risk of speaking out knowing the vulnerability one then sits in because now others can tell us what we said “wrong” . To be willing to admit if we are one of those who consistently is comfortable with criticizing the “they” who do take a stab at learning truth as opposed to being one of  the truth seekers ourselves.

-- To learn that the “popular”, “mainstream”  thinking does not always coincide with truth. To dare to stand with truth rather than with people when the people are wrong.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Ask the Student Panel” (This exercise may need another session  ; therefore, it would “bump out” another exercise if that happens.)

Vote for five youths to be on the “Ask the Student “ panel. We , the “audience” will ask them  (in writing) practical living  questions with Biblical truths included in the  answers.

Voting checklist.   Discuss points on check list. (Did I forget something you are thinking  of?).

IMPORTANT NOTE:  IF someone has all the positive traits listed below, they will be excellent at conflict resolution!   We KNOW that we have NO perfectly mature people – young or old – among us. NO ONE would perfectly fit the points beneath. So we are just looking for those who most closely fit.  We have to work with what we got at ROL J

    1.   Bear in mind we are looking for  answers guided by Spirit and Truth – who do you know that would best give those  kinds of answers?
    2.  People with “feelings” attached to their opinions can get moody when they are disagreed with , who do you know that can be objective, i.e., who loves truth more than being seen as  “right”? Who do you know that you can disagree with without their becoming mad at you and/or think that you are being “disloyal” to them personally?
    3. Humility says “I don’t know”; Pride “makes up” answers just to keep from admitting ignorance. Who do you know who is humble enough to be truthful about what they do and do not know?
    4. People in a panel discussion learn from each other as they participate.  Wise people listen to learn.  Who do you know that is willing to not only voice their opinion , but also allow themselves to admit when they have learned (or even changed!) by hearing another’s opinion?
    5. Wise people listen for TRUTH . They do not first see who is the “senior” or “the best friend” . They judge truth on its own merit, not by who it was (other than the Spirit of the Lord!) who said what.
    6. It is great to have a sense of humor in a discussion; however, sometimes people joke when it is time to be serious (and are serious when it is time to laugh). Who do you know who has a good balance between  being serious and being funny?
    7.   Wise people really are not moved by what the “they”, i.e., the “mainstream masses” -- think if the “they” are out of step with Spirit and Truth. Who do you know who fears God more than man?  Prov. 9:  10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
    8.    Wise people are willing to search out a matter and not settle for some quick answer in order to avoid conflict or to do the work of “digging deeper”.    Proverbs 25: 2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter

THE VOTE and the  acceptance speeches J

    Host notes:

I, Rosemary, will host and choose  what questions to use.  I  will ask one or as many as  I choose  to respond to the question.  They are free to disagree with one another. However, their answers must be Biblically true and afterwards…at one point…we will all “debrief” on their “performance”.   Or, maybe we will stop and “freeze frame” a particular moment and discuss it.

I, Rosemary, may ask a student right in the middle of the panel discussion what the other person just said.  Also, I may ask the person in the “audience”  who asked the question to summarize the answer given by the panel before I move onto the next question. We may as a group discuss whether or not someone is “hearing” clearly. In short,  the “exercise” will include stops and starts when learning can happen by doing so.

EACH PANEL MEMBER MAY CHOOSE ONE ADVISOR (OF ANY AGE) TO SIT ALONG SIDE THEM. THE ADVISOR MAY NOT ANSWER, JUST QUIETLY WHISPER “ADVICE. It is up to the panel member to put the “advice” in their own words (if they agree with it) or to disregard it.  The panel member ASKS for advice; i.e., the advisor never initiates it (through words, sighs, or body language J  )

You, all youth,  may come with questions (having read this beforehand) or do spontaneous ones….time will be given to do them or they can be handed in WHILE the panel is “in session .  I will have a helper to be in the group to take your papers and give them to me while I am hosting.

The “Ask the Panel “  begins……:

    Noon  to 1:15: Lunch;

1:15 —2:15 :   — IF “Ask the Student” panel  discussion and exercise is done (which is nearly impossible to imagine) , then:   One on one “debates” and student input on “results”. Learning to listen for truth beyond WHO is speaking.  Using the WORD as the standard of truth.

This time , to get around 3 rounds of “debates”, we will post a list of topics, then ask for volunteers and what topic(s) they would LIKE to use.   When 2 people choose the same topic, they will debate each other.  I will tell them which side they are on. (We can make topics out of the list of questions below.)

. Before each topic, we will ALL brainstorm on relevant scripture base for pro and con. The “debaters” should be getting clues and taking notes during the pre-debate time. I will choose which side (unless one clearly wants pro and the other clearly wants con). We will “debrief” on both debates.  IF time for  more debates than 3, so be it.

The actual debates will give each participant  up to 3 minutes speaking time in all. …

    2:15 -- 2:30  PM Break

:2:30 – 3:30  PM   Pick a question exercise :  Whole group together.  We will  stop for discussions to point out “learning points” during this exercise .

Pick a Question:  We will do this exercise as an entire group . Discuss:   WE ARE A “KEEP IT SIMPLE” ,” GIVE ME JUST THE HEADLINES “ SOCIETY IN A COMPLICATED WORLD.    Some questions demonstrate that many things are just not “simple” and may have many aspects to study out in order to begin to find an answer.

Some questions are VERY complicated!  Some questions beg for more questions before they can be answered. Some answers vary with the circumstances.

The last time we did something like this , we were in small groups in the consideration that we are learning to voice our opinions freely and needed that small group to be freer. This time we are all in one room.  It is quite natural that the older may (or may not?) speak forth more freely than the younger; however, we are encouraging the younger ones to “risk” speaking forth and therefore become more confident in doing so.

     The exercise:

    1. Pick a question (out of a container)
    2.    IF you know some  or all of what to say, say it.
    3.  If I know nothing or just a little about the question, discuss what you would have to do or know in order to present a decent answer -- Then “pass”.  Or, before you “pass”, you can deal with #4:
    4.  What other questions come to mind as I think about this question? If applicable, what circumstances may change the answer to the question?

Some questions are VERY complicated with many different “sides” to consider! So there are some we may  stay focused on for a few “rounds”…

We need to learn to deal forthright with “issues”.  It is easy to get other folks to grapple with those questions, wait for their answer, and then say why their answer is stupid. It is much harder to be the one working on answers!

Also, IF you are ignorant about a topic, so what? We have not ALL encountered ALL situations in life; therefore , we may have never thought about a particular question before.  Stay humble and admit you don’t know!

Some questions are more for older kids and we don’t expect a 12 year old to know….I did not want to create all questions with the very youngest in mind.

But, do not say aged 12 is too young to think and  to speak if  good answers pop into your consciousness! Look at Jesus (whose Spirit is IN us!):   Luke 2: 41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. 43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. 44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. 45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. 46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. 48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. 49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? 50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. 51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

3:30 Go play -- Families and/ or friend groups can decide when to break for Supper.

KYF kids (if ok with folks) can go alone to Mc Donald’s or Bob Evans . PH kids

(if ok with parents ) should be in groups of 3’s /4’s , etc.     All are paying for their own food all day.

From 3:30 PM to 8: 00 PM (ending time), we will be doing games and swimming for “play”………

    8:00 PM “See you later….thanks for coming…bye ya’ll….. J

Some sample questions and/or topics for any exercise at the seminar.  For our goals today, NONE of the topics are there for us to completely RESOLVE or to get inordinately involved in finding an answer – the purpose of EACH exercise today is to learn to communicate about things that are not so EASY to resolve. :

Also, although I would love to have you sprinkle all your comments with Biblical allusions, if you cannot, just adhere to Biblical principles. If what you say is obviously against a verse or passage, expect to be challenged by the Word.

    1.    Should a Christian be in a play in which they must wear a costume that is the same amount of covering as a rather immodest 2 piece bathing suit AND be flirtatious while wearing that? The topics of homosexuality and self-gratification are, until further notice, banned in every form on CTF. This does not include the debates now going, which are heavily moderated. Standard debates can go into very detailed and graphic discussions. This forum is supposed to be clean and friendly to all ages ranging from 13, and has become tainted because of topics like these. We ask that you keep this in mind whenever you debate topics involving sex. If you have any further questions, feel free to PM myself or another administrator.[/b]

    97.   You go to a garage sale and buy a piece of jewelry for 7.00. Later you have it evaluated and it is worth 700.00. You know the old , widow lady you bought it from. She is on a fixed income and is in need. What do you do? You have some needs too, e.g., for Bible college tuition.

    98. You are having a garage sale. You just bought a  designer dress (the tickets are still on it – it says 3,200.00 on the ticket – the clerk must have been blind!!)  at Good will for 5.00. At that sale you really magnify the fact it came from a big name designer and sell it to someone for 1,000.00. You act as if YOU bought it brand new. You don’t SAY that; you just find ways to make it seem that way . Is that a Christian thing to do?

    99.  You are 21 years old. Your parents are missionaries in Africa. There is a young man who passionately loves the Lord. You are Dutch. He is from the Tutsi tribe. Your parents are vehemently opposed to your being with him because of the racial /cultural divide. You love him; he loves you. You feel strongly that the Lord has put the 2 of you together. What do you do?

    100.  You want to be baptized . Your parents are from a denomination that baptized you as an infant. They think you are telling them that they are in a false church when you tell them you want to be baptized (you are 18).  They are hurt. They think their way is right. What do you do?

Remember: The important thing is not the topic; the important thing is fulfilling the goals of the seminar!

I can’t imagine any time left with the above possibilities, BUT, IF…then maybe other exercises could be :

Why God Used D. L. Moody

    by R. A. Torrey

Eighty-six years ago (February 5, 1837), there was born of poor parents in a humble farmhouse in Northfield, Massachusetts, a little baby who was to become the greatest man, as I believe, of his generation or of his century — Dwight L. Moody. After our great generals, great statesmen, great scientists and great men of letters have passed away and been forgotten, and their work and its helpful influence has come to an end, the work of D. L. Moody will go on and its saving influence continue and increase, bringing blessing not only to every state in the Union but to every nation on earth. Yes, it will continue throughout the ages of eternity.

My subject is "Why God Used D. L. Moody," and I can think of no subject upon which I would rather speak. For I shall not seek to glorify Mr. Moody, but the God who by His grace, His entirely unmerited favor, used him so mightily, and the Christ who saved him by His atoning death and resurrection life, and the Holy Spirit who lived in him and wrought through him and who alone made him the mighty power that he was to this world. Furthermore: I hope to make it clear that the God who used D. L. Moody in his day is just as ready to use you and me, in this day, if we, on our part, do what D. L. Moody did, which was what made it possible for God to so abundantly use him.

The whole secret of why D. L. Moody was such a mightily used man you will find in Psalm 62:11: "God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that POWER BELONGETH UNTO GOD." I am glad it does. I am glad that power did not belong to D. L. Moody; I am glad that it did not belong to Charles G. Finney; I am glad that it did not belong to Martin Luther; I am glad that it did not belong to any other Christian man whom God has greatly used in this world's history. Power belongs to God. If D. L. Moody had any power, and he had great power, he got it from God.

But God does not give His power arbitrarily. It is true that He gives it to whomsoever He will, but He wills to give it on certain conditions, which are clearly revealed in His Word; and D. L. Moody met those conditions and God made him the most wonderful preacher of his generation; yes, I think the most wonderful man of his generation.

But how was it that D. L. Moody had that power of God so wonderfully manifested in his life? Pondering this question it seemed to me that there were seven things in the life of D. L. Moody that accounted for God's using him so largely as He did.

    1. A Fully Surrendered Man

The first thing that accounts for God's using D. L. Moody so mightily was that he was a fully surrendered man. Every ounce of that two-hundred-and-eighty -pound body of his belonged to God; everything he was and everything he had, belonged wholly to God. Now, I am not saying that Mr. Moody was perfect; he was not. If I attempted to, I presume I could point out some defects in his character. It does not occur to me at this moment what they were; but I am confident that I could think of some, if I tried real hard. I have never yet met a perfect man, not one. I have known perfect men in the sense in which the Bible commands us to be perfect, i.e., men who are wholly God's, out and out for God, fully surrendered to God, with no will but God's will; but I have never known a man in whom I could not see some defects, some places where he might have been improved.

No, Mr. Moody was not a faultless man. If he had any flaws in his character, and he had, I presume I was in a position to know them better than almost any other man, because of my very close association with him in the later years of his life; and furthermore, I suppose that in his latter days he opened his heart to me more fully than to anyone else in the world. I think He told me some things that he told no one else. I presume I knew whatever defects there were in his character as well as anybody. But while I recognized such flaws, nevertheless, I know that he was a man who belonged wholly to God.

The first month I was in Chicago, we were having a talk about something upon which we very widely differed, and Mr. Moody turned to me very frankly and very kindly and said in defense of his own position: "Torrey, if I believed that God wanted me to jump out of that window, I would jump." I believe he would. If he thought God wanted him to do anything, he would do it. He belonged wholly, unreservedly, unqualifiedly, entirely, to God.

Henry Varley, a very intimate friend of Mr. Moody in the earlier days of his work, loved to tell how he once said to him: "It remains to be seen what God will do with a man who gives himself up wholly to Him." I am told that when Mr. Henry Varley said that, Mr. Moody said to himself: "Well, I will be that man." And I, for my part, do not think "it remains to be seen" what God will do with a man who gives himself up wholly to Him. I think it has been seen already in D. L. Moody.

If you and I are to be used in our sphere as D. L. Moody was used in his, we must put all that we have and all that we are in the hands of God, for Him to use as He will, to send us where He will, for God to do with us what He will, and we, on our part, to do everything God bids us do.

There are thousands and tens of thousands of men and women in Christian work, brilliant men and women, rarely gifted men and women, men and women who are making great sacrifices, men and women who have put all conscious sin out of their lives, yet who, nevertheless, have stopped short of absolute surrender to God, and therefore have stopped short of fullness of power. But Mr. Moody did not stop short of absolute surrender to God; he was a wholly surrendered man, and if you and I are to be used, you and I must be wholly surrendered men and women.

    2. A Man of Prayer

The second secret of the great power exhibited in Mr. Moody's life was that Mr. Moody was in the deepest and most meaningful sense a man of prayer. People oftentimes say to me: "Well, I went many miles to see and to hear D. L. Moody and he certainly was a wonderful preacher." Yes, D. L. Moody certainly was a wonderful preacher; taking it all in all, the most wonderful preacher I have ever heard, and it was a great privilege to hear him preach as he alone could preach; but out of a very intimate acquaintance with him I wish to testify that he was a far greater pray-er than he was preacher.

Time and time again, he was confronted by obstacles that seemed insurmountable, but he always knew the way to surmount and to overcome all difficulties. He knew the way to bring to pass anything that needed to be brought to pass. He knew and believed in the deepest depths of his soul that "nothing was too hard for the Lord" and that prayer could do anything that God could do.

Often times Mr. Moody would write me when he was about to undertake some new work, saying: "I am beginning work in such and such a place on such and such a day; I wish you would get the students together for a day of fasting and prayer" And often I have taken those letters and read them to the students in the lecture room and said: "Mr. Moody wants us to have a day of fasting and prayer, first for God's blessing on our own souls and work, and then for God's blessing on him and his work."

Often we were gathered in the lecture room far into the night — sometimes till one, two, three, four or even five o'clock in the morning, crying to God, just because Mr. Moody urged us to wait upon God until we received His blessing. How many men and women I have known whose lives and characters have been transformed by those nights of prayer and who have wrought mighty things in many lands because of those nights of prayer!

One day Mr. Moody drove up to my house at Northfield and said: "Torrey, I want you to take a ride with me." I got into the carriage and we drove out toward Lover's Lane, talking about some great and unexpected difficulties that had arisen in regard to the work in Northfield and Chicago, and in connection with other work that was very dear to him.

As we drove along, some black storm clouds lay ahead of us, and then suddenly, as we were talking, it began to rain. He drove the horse into a shed near the entrance to Lover's Lane to shelter the horse, and then laid the reins upon the dashboard and said: "Torrey, pray"; and then, as best I could, I prayed, while he in his heart joined me in prayer. And when my voice was silent he began to pray. Oh, I wish you could have heard that prayer! I shall never forget it, so simple, so trustful, so definite and so direct and so mighty. When the storm was over and we drove back to town, the obstacles had been surmounted, and the work of the schools, and other work that was threatened, went on as it had never gone on before, and it has gone on until this day.

As we drove back, Mr. Moody said to me: "Torrey, we will let the other men do the talking and the criticizing, and we will stick to the work that God has given us to do, and let Him take care of the difficulties and answer the criticisms."

On one occasion Mr. Moody said to me in Chicago: "I have just found, to my surprise, that we are twenty thousand dollars behind in our finances for the work here and in Northfield, and we must have that twenty thousand dollars, and I am going to get it by prayer." He did not tell a soul who had the ability to give a penny of the twenty thousand dollars' deficit, but looked right to God and said: "I need twenty thousand dollars for my work; send me that money in such a way that I will know it comes straight from Thee." And God heard that prayer. The money came in such a way that it was clear that it came from God in direct answer to prayer.

Yes, D. L. Moody was a man who believed in the God who answers prayer, and not only believed in Him in a theoretical way but believed in Him in a practical way. He was a man who met every difficulty that stood in his way — by prayer. Everything he undertook was backed up by prayer, and in everything, his ultimate dependence was upon God.

    3. A Deep and Practical Student of the Bible

The third secret of Mr. Moody's power, or the third reason why God used D. L. Moody, was because he was a deep and practical student of the Word of God. Nowadays it is often said of D. L. Moody that he was not a student. I wish to say that he was a student; most emphatically he was a student. He was not a student of psychology; he was not a student of anthropology — I am very sure he would not have known what that word meant; he was not a student of biology; he was not a student of philosophy; he was not even a student of theology, in the technical sense of the term; but he was a student, a profound and practical student of the one Book that is more worth studying than all other books in the world put together; he was a student of the Bible.

Every day of his life, I have reason for believing, he arose very early in the morning to study the Word of God, way down to the close of his life. Mr. Moody used to rise about four o'clock in the morning to study the Bible. He would say to me: "If I am going to get in any study, I have got to get up before the other folks get up"; and he would shut himself up in a remote room in his house, alone with his God and his Bible.

I shall never forget the first night I spent in his home. He had invited me to take the superintendency of the Bible Institute and I had already begun my work; I was on my way to some city in the East to preside at the International Christian Workers' Convention. He wrote me saying: "Just as soon as the Convention is over, come up to Northfield." He learned when I was likely to arrive and drove over to South Vernon to meet me. That night he had all the teachers from the Mount Hermon School and from the Northfield Seminary come together at the house to meet me, and to talk over the problems of the two schools. We talked together far on into the night, and then, after the principals and teachers of the schools had gone home, Mr. Moody and I talked together about the problems a while longer.

It was very late when I got to bed that night, but very early the next morning, about five o'clock, I heard a gentle tap on my door. Then I heard Mr. Moody's voice whispering: "Torrey, are you up?" I happened to be; I do not always get up at that early hour but I happened to be up that particular morning. He said: "I want you to go somewhere with me," and I went down with him. Then I found out that he had already been up an hour or two in his room studying the Word of God.

Oh, you may talk about power; but, if you neglect the one Book that God has given you as the one instrument through which He imparts and exercises His power, you will not have it. You may read many books and go to many conventions and you may have your all-night prayer meetings to pray for the power of the Holy Ghost; but unless you keep in constant and close association with the one Book, the Bible, you will not have power. And if you ever had power, you will not maintain it except by the daily, earnest, intense study of that Book.

Ninety-nine Christians in every hundred are merely playing at Bible study; and therefore ninety-nine Christians in every hundred are mere weaklings, when they might be giants, both in their Christian life and in their service.

It was largely because of his thorough knowledge of the Bible, and his practical knowledge of the Bible, that Mr. Moody drew such immense crowds. On "Chicago Day," in October, 1893, none of the theaters of Chicago dared to open because it was expected that everybody in Chicago would go on that day to the World's Fair; and, in point of fact, something like four hundred thousand people did pass through the gates of the Fair that day. Everybody in Chicago was expected to be at that end of the city on that day. But Mr. Moody said to me: "Torrey, engage the Central Music Hall and announce meetings from nine o'clock in the morning till six o'clock at night." "Why," I replied, "Mr. Moody, nobody will be at this end of Chicago on that day; not even the theaters dare to open; everybody is going down to Jackson Park to the Fair; we cannot get anybody out on this day."

Mr. Moody replied: "You do as you are told"; and I did as I was told and engaged the Central Music Hall for continuous meetings from nine o'clock in the morning till six o'clock at night. But I did it with a heavy heart; I thought there would be poor audiences. I was on the program at noon that day. Being very busy in my office about the details of the campaign, I did not reach the Central Music Hall till almost noon. I thought I would have no trouble in getting in. But when I got almost to the Hall I found to my amazement that not only was it packed but the vestibule was packed and the steps were packed, and there was no getting anywhere near the door; and if I had not gone round and climbed in a back window they would have lost their speaker for that hour. But that would not have been of much importance, for the crowds had not gathered to hear me; it was the magic of Mr. Moody's name that had drawn them. And why did they long to hear Mr. Moody? Because they knew that while he was not versed in many of the philosophies and fads and fancies of the day, he did know the one Book that this old world most longs to know — the Bible.

I shall never forget Moody's last visit to Chicago. The ministers of Chicago had sent me to Cincinnati to invite him to come to Chicago and hold a meeting. In response to the invitation, Mr. Moody said to me: "If you will hire the Auditorium for weekday mornings and afternoons and have meetings at ten in the morning and three in the afternoon, I will go. " I replied: "Mr. Moody, you know what a busy city Chicago is, and how impossible it is for businessmen to get out at ten o'clock in the morning and three in the afternoon on working days. Will you not hold evening meetings and meetings on Sunday?" "No," he replied, "I am afraid if I did, I would interfere with the regular work of the churches."

I went back to Chicago and engaged the Auditorium, which at that time was the building having the largest seating capacity of any building in the city, seating in those days about seven thousand people; I announced weekday meetings, with Mr. Moody as the speaker, at ten o'clock in the mornings and three o'clock in the afternoons.

At once protests began to pour in upon me. One of them came from Marshall Field, at that time the business king of Chicago. "Mr. Torrey," Mr. Field wrote, "we businessmen of Chicago wish to hear Mr. Moody, and you know perfectly well how impossible it is for us to get out at ten o'clock in the morning and three o'clock in the afternoon; have evening meetings." I received many letters of a similar purport and wrote to Mr. Moody urging him to give us evening meetings. But Mr. Moody simply replied: "You do as you are told," and I did as I was told; that is the way I kept my job.

On the first morning of the meetings I went down to the Auditorium about half an hour before the appointed time, but I went with much fear and apprehension; I thought the Auditorium would be nowhere nearly full. When I reached there, to my amazement I found a queue of people four abreast extending from the Congress Street entrance to Wabash Avenue, then a block north on Wabash Avenue, then a break to let traffic through, and then another block, and so on. I went in through the back door, and there were many clamoring for entrance there. When the doors were opened at the appointed time, we had a cordon of twenty policemen to keep back the crowd; but the crowd was so great that it swept the cordon of policemen off their feet and packed eight thousand people into the building before we could get the doors shut. And I think there were as many left on the outside as there were in the building. I do not think that anyone else in the world could have drawn such a crowd at such a time.

Why? Because though Mr. Moody knew little about science or philosophy or literature in general, he did know the one Book that this old world is perishing to know and longing to know; and this old world will flock to hear men who know the Bible and preach the Bible as they will flock to hear nothing else on earth.

During all the months of the World's Fair in Chicago, no one could draw such crowds as Mr. Moody. Judging by the papers, one would have thought that the great religious event in Chicago at that time was the World's Congress of Religions. One very gifted man of letters in the East was invited to speak at this Congress. He saw in this invitation the opportunity of his life and prepared his paper, the exact title of which I do not now recall, but it was something along the line of "New Light on the Old Doctrines." He prepared the paper with great care, and then sent it around to his most trusted and gifted friends for criticisms. These men sent it back to him with such emendations as they had to suggest. Then he rewrote the paper, incorporating as many of the suggestions and criticisms as seemed wise. Then he sent it around for further criticisms. Then he wrote the paper a third time, and had it, as he trusted, perfect. He went on to Chicago to meet this coveted opportunity of speaking at the World's Congress of Religions.

It was at eleven o'clock on a Saturday morning (if I remember correctly) that he was to speak. He stood outside the door of the platform waiting for the great moment to arrive, and as the clock struck eleven he walked on to the platform to face a magnificent audience of eleven women and two men! But there was not a building anywhere in Chicago that would accommodate the very same day the crowds that would flock to hear Mr. Moody at any hour of the day or night.

Oh, men and women, if you wish to get an audience and wish to do that audience some good after you get them, study, study, STUDY the one Book, and preach, preach, PREACH the one Book, and teach, teach, TEACH the one Book, the Bible, the only Book that is God's Word, and the only Book that has power to gather and hold and bless the crowds for any great length of time.

    4. A Humble Man

The fourth reason why God continuously, through so many years, used D.L. Moody was because he was a humble man. I think D. L. Moody was the humblest man I ever knew in all my life. He loved to quote the words of another; "Faith gets the most; love works the most; but humility keeps the most. "

He himself had the humility that keeps everything it gets. As I have already said, he was the most humble man I ever knew, i.e., the most humble man when we bear in mind the great things that he did, and the praise that was lavished upon him. Oh, how he loved to put himself in the background and put other men in the foreground. How often he would stand on a platform with some of us little fellows seated behind him and as he spoke he would say: "There are better men coming after me." As he said it, he would point back over his shoulder with his thumb to the "little fellows. " I do not know how he could believe it, but he really did believe that the others that were coming after him were really better than he was. He made no pretense to a humility he did not possess. In his heart of hearts he constantly underestimated himself, and overestimated others.

He really believed that God would use other men in a larger measure than he had been used. Mr. Moody loved to keep himself in the background. At his conventions at Northfield, or anywhere else, he would push the other men to the front and, if he could, have them do all the preaching — McGregor, Campbell Morgan, Andrew Murray, and the rest of them. The only way we could get him to take any part in the program was to get up in the convention and move that we hear D. L. Moody at the next meeting. He continually put himself out of sight.

Oh, how many a man has been full of promise and God has used him, and then the man thought that he was the whole thing and God was compelled to set him aside! I believe more promising workers have gone on the rocks through self-sufficiency and self-esteem than through any other cause. I can look back for forty years, or more, and think of many men who are now wrecks or derelicts who at one time the world thought were going to be something great. But they have disappeared entirely from the public view. Why? Because of overestimation of self. Oh, the men and women who have been put aside because they began to think that they were somebody, that they were "IT," and therefore God was compelled to set them aside.

I remember a man with whom I was closely associated in a great movement in this country. We were having a most successful convention in Buffalo, and he was greatly elated. As we walked down the street together to one of the meetings one day, he said to me: "Torrey, you and I are the most important men in Christian work in this country," or words to that effect. I replied: "John, I am sorry to hear you say that; for as I read my Bible I find man after man who had accomplished great things whom God had to set aside because of his sense of his own importance." And God set that man aside also from that time. I think he is still living, but no one ever hears of him, or has heard of him for years.

God used D. L. Moody, I think, beyond any man of his day; but it made no difference how much God used him, he never was puffed up. One day, speaking to me of a great New York preacher, now dead, Mr. Moody said: "He once did a very foolish thing, the most foolish thing that I ever knew a man, ordinarily so wise as he was, to do. He came up to me at the close of a little talk I had given and said: 'Young man, you have made a great address tonight.'" Then Mr. Moody continued: "How foolish of him to have said that! It almost turned my head." But, thank God, it did not turn his head, and even when pretty much all the ministers in England, Scotland and Ireland, and many of the English bishops were ready to follow D. L. Moody wherever he led, even then it never turned his head one bit. He would get down on his face before God, knowing he was human, and ask God to empty him of all self-sufficiency. And God did.

Oh, men and women! especially young men and young women, perhaps God is beginning to use you; very likely people are saying: "What a wonderful gift he has as a Bible teacher, what power he has as a preacher, for such a young man!" Listen: get down upon your face before God. I believe here lies one of the most dangerous snares of the Devil. When the Devil cannot discourage a man, he approaches him on another tack, which he knows is far worse in its results; he puffs him up by whispering in his ear: "You are the leading evangelist of the day. You are the man who will sweep everything before you. You are the coming man. You are the D. L. Moody of the day"; and if you listen to him, he will ruin you. The entire shore of the history of Christian workers is strewn with the wrecks of gallant vessels that were full of promise a few years ago, but these men became puffed up and were driven on the rocks by the wild winds of their own raging self-esteem.

    5. His Entire Freedom from the Love of Money

The fifth secret of D. L. Moody's continual power and usefulness was his entire freedom from the love of money. Mr. Moody might have been a wealthy man, but money had no charms for him. He loved to gather money for God's work; he refused to accumulate money for himself. He told me during the World's Fair that if he had taken, for himself, the royalties on the hymnbooks which he had published, they would have amounted, at that time, to a million dollars. But Mr. Moody refused to touch the money. He had a perfect right to take it, for he was responsible for the publication of the books and it was his money that went into the publication of the first of them.

Mr. Sankey had some hymns that he had taken with him to England and he wished to have them published. He went to a publisher (I think Morgan & Scott) and they declined to publish them, because, as they said, Philip Phillips had recently been over and published a hymnbook and it had not done well. However, Mr. Moody had a little money and he said that he would put it into the publication of these hymns in cheap form; and he did. The hymns had a most remarkable and unexpected sale; they were then published in book form and large profits accrued. The financial results were offered to Mr. Moody, but he refused to touch them. "But," it was urged on him, "the money belongs to you"; but he would not touch it.

Mr. Fleming H. Revell was at the time treasurer of the Chicago Avenue Church, commonly known as the Moody Tabernacle. Only the basement of this new church building had been completed, funds having been exhausted. Hearing of the hymnbook situation Mr. Revell suggested, in a letter to friends in London, that the money be given for completion of this building, and it was. Afterwards, so much money came in that it was given, by the committee into whose hands Mr. Moody put the matter, to various Christian enterprises.

In a certain city to which Mr. Moody went in the latter years of his life, and where I went with him, it was publicly announced that Mr. Moody would accept no money whatever for his services. Now, in point of fact, Mr. Moody was dependent, in a measure, upon what was given him at various services; but when this announcement was made, Mr. Moody said nothing, and left that city without a penny's compensation for the hard work he did there; and, I think, he paid his own hotel bill. And yet a minister in that very city came out with an article in a paper, which I read, in which he told a fairy tale of the financial demands that Mr. Moody made upon them, which story I knew personally to be absolutely untrue. Millions of dollars passed into Mr. Moody hands, but they passed through; they did not stick to his fingers.

This is the point at which many an evangelist makes shipwreck, and his great work comes to an untimely end. The love of money on the part of some evangelists has done more to discredit evangelistic work in our day, and to lay many an evangelist on the shelf, than almost any other cause.

While I was away on my recent tour I was told by one of the most reliable ministers in one of our eastern cities of a campaign conducted by one who has been greatly used in the past. (Do not imagine, for a moment, that I am speaking of Billy Sunday, for I am not; this same minister spoke in the highest terms of Mr. Sunday and of a campaign which he conducted in a city where this minister was a pastor.) This evangelist of whom I now speak came to a city for a united evangelistic campaign and was supported by fifty-three churches. The minister who told me about the matter was himself chairman of the Finance Committee.

The evangelist showed such a longing for money and so deliberately violated the agreement he had made before coming to the city and so insisted upon money being gathered for him in other ways than he had himself prescribed in the original contract, that this minister threatened to resign from the Finance Committee. He was, however, persuaded to remain to avoid a scandal. "As the total result of the three weeks' campaign there were only twenty-four clear decisions," said my friend; "and after it was over the ministers got together and by a vote with but one dissenting voice, they agreed to send a letter to this evangelist telling him frankly that they were done with him and with his methods of evangelism forever, and that they felt it their duty to warn other cities against him and his methods and the results of his work." Let us lay the lesson to our hearts and take warning in time.

    6. His Consuming Passion for the Salvation of the Lost

The sixth reason why God used D. L. Moody was because of his consuming passion for the salvation of the lost. Mr. Moody made the resolution, shortly after he himself was saved, that he would never let twenty-four hours pass over his head without speaking to at least one person about his soul. His was a very busy life, and sometimes he would forget his resolution until the last hour, and sometimes he would get out of bed, dress, go out and talk to someone about his soul in order that he might not let one day pass without having definitely told at least one of his fellow-mortals about his need and the Savior who could meet it.

One night Mr. Moody was going home from his place of business. It was very late, and it suddenly occurred to him that he had not spoken to one single person that day about accepting Christ. He said to himself: "Here's a day lost. I have not spoken to anyone today and I shall not see anybody at this late hour." But as he walked up the street he saw a man standing under a lamppost. The man was a perfect stranger to him, though it turned out afterwards the man knew who Mr. Moody was. He stepped up to this stranger and said: "Are you a Christian?" The man replied: "That is none of your business, whether I am a Christian or not. If you were not a sort of a preacher I would knock you into the gutter for your impertinence." Mr. Moody said a few earnest words and passed on.

The next day that man called upon one of Mr. Moody's prominent business friends and said to him: "That man Moody of yours over on the North Side is doing more harm than he is good. He has got zeal without knowledge. He stepped up to me last night, a perfect stranger, and insulted me. He asked me if I were a Christian, and I told him it was none of his business and if he were not a sort of a preacher I would knock him into the gutter for his impertinence. He is doing more harm than he is good. He has got zeal without knowledge." Mr. Moody's friend sent for him and said: "Moody, you are doing more harm than you are good; you've got zeal without knowledge: you insulted a friend of mine on the street last night. You went up to him, a perfect stranger, and asked him if he were a Christian, and he tells me if you had not been a sort of a preacher he would have knocked you into the gutter for your impertinence. You are doing more harm than you are good; you have got zeal without knowledge."

Mr. Moody went out of that man's office somewhat crestfallen. He wondered if he were not doing more harm than he was good, if he really had zeal without knowledge. (Let me say, in passing, it is far better to have zeal without knowledge than it is to have knowledge without zeal. Some men and women are as full of knowledge as an egg is of meat; they are so deeply versed in Bible truth that they can sit in criticism on the preachers and give the preachers pointers, but they have so little zeal that they do not lead one soul to Christ in a whole year.)

Weeks passed by. One night Mr. Moody was in bed when he heard a tremendous pounding at his front door. He jumped out of bed and rushed to the door. He thought the house was on fire. He thought the man would break down the door. He opened the door and there stood this man. He said: "Mr. Moody, I have not had a good night's sleep since that night you spoke to me under the lamppost, and I have come around at this unearthly hour of the night for you to tell me what I have to do to be saved." Mr. Moody took him in and told him what to do to be saved. Then he accepted Christ, and when the Civil War broke out, he went to the front and laid down his life fighting for his country.

Another night, Mr. Moody got home and had gone to bed before it occurred to him that he had not spoken to a soul that day about accepting Christ. "Well," he said to himself, "it is no good getting up now; there will be nobody on the street at this hour of the night." But he got up, dressed and went to the front door. It was pouring rain. "Oh," he said, "there will be no one out in this pouring rain. Just then he heard the patter of a man's feet as he came down the street, holding an umbrella over his head. Then Mr. Moody darted out and rushed up to the man and said: "May I share the shelter of your umbrella?" "Certainly," the man replied. Then Mr. Moody said: "Have you any shelter in the time of storm?" and preached Jesus to him. Oh, men and women, if we were as full of zeal for the salvation of souls as that, how long would it be before the whole country would be shaken by the power of a mighty, God-sent revival?

One day in Chicago — the day after the elder Carter Harrison was shot, when his body was lying in state in the City Hall — Mr. Moody and I were riding up Randolph Street together in a streetcar right alongside of the City Hall. The car could scarcely get through because of the enormous crowds waiting to get in and view the body of Mayor Harrison. As the car tried to push its way through the crowd, Mr. Moody turned to me and said: "Torrey, what does this mean?" "Why," I said, "Carter Harrison's body lies there in the City Hall and these crowds are waiting to see it."

Then he said: "This will never do, to let these crowds get away from us without preaching to them; we must talk to them. You go and hire Hooley's Opera House (which was just opposite the City Hall) for the whole day." I did so. The meetings began at nine o'clock in the morning, and we had one continuous service from that hour until six in the evening, to reach those crowds.

Mr. Moody was a man on fire for God. Not only was he always "on the job" himself but he was always getting others to work as well. He once invited me down to Northfield to spend a month there with the schools, speaking first to one school and then crossing the river to the other. I was obliged to use the ferry a great deal; it was before the present bridge was built at that point.

One day he said to me: "Torrey, did you know that that ferryman that ferries you across every day was unconverted?" He did not tell me to speak to him, but I knew what he meant. When some days later it was told him that the ferryman was saved, he was exceedingly happy.

Once, when walking down a certain street in Chicago, Mr. Moody stepped up to a man, a perfect stranger to him, and said: "Sir, are you a Christian?" "You mind your own business," was the reply. Mr. Moody replied: "This is my business." The man said, "Well, then, you must be Moody." Out in Chicago they used to call him in those early days "Crazy Moody," because day and night he was speaking to everybody he got a chance to speak to about being saved.

One time he was going to Milwaukee, and in the seat that he had chosen sat a traveling man. Mr. Moody sat down beside him and immediately began to talk with him. " Where are you going?" Mr. Moody asked. When told the name of the town he said: "We will soon be there; we'll have to get down to business at once. Are you saved?" The man said that he was not, and Mr. Moody took out his Bible and there on the train showed him the way of salvation. Then he said: "Now, you must take Christ." The man did; he was converted right there on the train.

Most of you have heard, I presume, the story President Wilson used to tell about D. L. Moody. Ex-President Wilson said that he once went into a barber shop and took a chair next to the one in which D. L. Moody was sitting, though he did not know that Mr. Moody was there. He had not been in the chair very long before, as ex-President Wilson phrased it, he "knew there was a personality in the other chair," and he began to listen to the conversation going on; he heard Mr. Moody tell the barber about the Way of Life, and President Wilson said, "I have never forgotten that scene to this day." When Mr. Moody was gone, he asked the barber who he was; when he was told that it was D. L. Moody, President Wilson said: "It made an impression upon me I have not yet forgotten."

On one occasion in Chicago Mr. Moody saw a little girl standing on the street with a pail in her hand. He went up to her and invited her to his Sunday school, telling her what a pleasant place it was. She promised to go the following Sunday, but she did not do so. Mr. Moody watched for her for weeks, and then one day he saw her on the street again, at some distance from him. He started toward her, but she saw him too and started to run away. Mr. Moody followed her. Down she went one street, Mr. Moody after her; up she went another street, Mr. Moody after her, through an alley, Mr. Moody still following; out on another street, Mr. Moody after her; then she dashed into a saloon and Mr. Moody dashed after her. She ran out the back door and up a flight of stairs, Mr. Moody still following; she dashed into a room, Mr. Moody following; she threw herself under the bed and Mr. Moody reached under the bed and pulled her out by the foot, and led her to Christ.

He found that her mother was a widow who had once seen better circumstances, but had gone down until now she was living over this saloon. She had several children. Mr. Moody led the mother and all the family to Christ. Several of the children were prominent members of the Moody Church until they moved away, and afterwards became prominent in churches elsewhere. This particular child, whom he pulled from underneath the bed, was, when I was the pastor of the Moody Church, the wife of one of the most prominent officers in the church.

Only two or three years ago, as I came out of a ticket office in Memphis, Tennessee, a fine-looking young man followed me. He said: "Are you not Dr. Torrey?" I said, "Yes." He said: "I am so and so." He was the son of this woman. He was then a traveling man, and an officer in the church where he lived. When Mr. Moody pulled that little child out from under the bed by the foot he was pulling a whole family into the Kingdom of God, and eternity alone will reveal how many succeeding generations he was pulling into the Kingdom of God.

D.L. Moody's consuming passion for souls was not for the souls of those who would be helpful to him in building up his work here or elsewhere; his love for souls knew no class limitations. He was no respecter of persons; it might be an earl or a duke or it might be an ignorant colored boy on the street; it was all the same to him; there was a soul to save and he did what lay in his power to save that soul.

A friend once told me that the first time he ever heard of Mr. Moody was when Mr. Reynolds of Peoria told him that he once found Mr. Moody sitting in one of the squatters' shanties that used to be in that part of the city toward the lake, which was then called, "The Sands," with a colored boy on his knee, a tallow candle in one hand and a Bible in the other, and Mr. Moody was spelling out the words (for at that time the boy could not read very well) of certain verses of Scripture, in an attempt to lead that ignorant colored boy to Christ.

Oh, young men and women and all Christian workers, if you and I were on fire for souls like that, how long would it be before we had a revival? Suppose that tonight the fire of God falls and fills our hearts, a burning fire that will send us out all over the country, and across the water to China, Japan, India and Africa, to tell lost souls the way of salvation!

    7. Definitely Endued with Power from on High

My, Rosemary’s, insert here: a quotation from a book written by Moody’s son, “The Life of Dwight L Moody”:

“An intense hunger and thirst for spiritual power were aro9used in him by two women who used to attend his meeting and sit on the front seat.

At the close of the services they would say to him, ‘we have been praying for you”  Moody would reply, “Why don’t you pray for the people?” The women said, “Because you need the power of the Spirit.”

In relating the incident years later Mr. Moody said, “I need the power? I thought I had power! I had the largest congregations in Chicago, and there were many conversions. But right along these tow godly women kept praying for me, and their earnest talk about anointing for special service set me to thinking.

“ I asked them to come and talk with me, and they poured out their hearts in prayer that I might receive the filling of the Holy Spirit. There came a great hunger into my soul. I did not know what it was.

“I began to cry out as I never did before. I really felt I did not want to live if I could not have this power for service.”

While Mr. Moody was in this condition the city of Chicago was laid in ashes by a fire that nearly destroyed the city. His church was burned to the ground . Then the fire crossed the river and the Moody’s had to flee in the night as the flames engulfed their home also.

As soon as his wife and family were safe with friends, Mr. Moody devoted himself to relief work. He went to the East to raise money for the homeless and also for a new church.

During this time the hunger for more spiritual power was still upon Mr. Moody. “My heart was not in the work of begging money, “he said. “I could not appeal; I was crying all the time that “God would fill me with His Spirit”

Baptized In The Spirit. “Well, one day, in the city of New York…oh, what a day!. I cannot describe it, I seldom refer to it; it is almost too sacred an experience to name. Paul had an experience of which he never spoke for fourteen years.

“I can only say that God revealed Himself to me, and I had such an experience of His love that I had to ask Him to stay His hand.

“I went to preaching again. The sermons were not different; I did not present any new truths, and yet hundreds were converted . I would not now be placed back where I was before that blessed experience if you should give me all the world – it would be as the small dust of the balance.

In Trials and Triumphs of the faith, 1875 Dr. Richard Boyd, a friend of Moody, wrote:

When I got to the rooms of the Y.M.C.A. , I found the meeting on fire. The young men were speaking in tongues and prophesying. What on earth did it mean? Only that Moody had been there addressing them that afternoon.”

    From “Moody and His Work:

At a meeting in Los Angeles, Dr. Torrey told how in one of Mr. Moody’s big services in London, as he arose to read the Scripture, he began involuntarily to speak words that neither he nor his congregation understood.

(Azusa Street revival, to put Moody’s time in Pentecostal history perspective, was in 1906)  Before that Charles Parham had a student with the baptism – a year or so before.

    Back to Torrey’s article:

The seventh thing that was the secret of why God used D. L. Moody was that he had a very definite enduement with power from on High, a very clear and definite baptism with the Holy Ghost. Moody knew he had "the baptism with the Holy Ghost"; he had no doubt about it. In his early days he was a great hustler; he had a tremendous desire to do something, but he had no real power. He worked very largely in the energy of the flesh.

But there were two humble Free Methodist women who used to come over to his meetings in the Y.M.C.A. One was "Auntie Cook" and the other, Mrs. Snow. (I think her name was not Snow at that time.) These two women would come to Mr. Moody at the close of his meetings and say: "We are praying for you." Finally, Mr. Moody became somewhat nettled and said to them one night: "Why are you praying for me? Why don't you pray for the unsaved?" They replied: "We are praying that you may get the power." Mr. Moody did not know what that meant, but he got to thinking about it, and then went to these women and said: "I wish you would tell me what you mean"; and they told him about the definite baptism with the Holy Ghost. Then he asked that he might pray with them and not they merely pray for him.

Auntie Cook once told me of the intense fervor with which Mr. Moody prayed on that occasion. She told me in words that I scarcely dare repeat, though I have never forgotten them. And he not only prayed with them, but he also prayed alone.

Not long after, one day on his way to England, he was walking up Wall Street in New York; (Mr. Moody very seldom told this and I almost hesitate to tell it) and in the midst of the bustle and hurry of that city his prayer was answered; the power of God fell upon him as he walked up the street and he had to hurry off to the house of a friend and ask that he might have a room by himself, and in that room he stayed alone for hours; and the Holy Ghost came upon him, filling his soul with such joy that at last he had to ask God to withhold His hand, lest he die on the spot from very joy. He went out from that place with the power of the Holy Ghost upon him, and when he got to London (partly through the prayers of a bedridden saint in Mr. Lessey's church), the power of God wrought through him mightily in North London, and hundreds were added to the churches; and that was what led to his being invited over to the wonderful campaign that followed in later years.

Time and again Mr. Moody would come to me and say: "Torrey, I want you to preach on the baptism with the Holy Ghost." I do not know how many times he asked me to speak on that subject. Once, when I had been invited to preach in the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York (invited at Mr. Moody's suggestion; had it not been for his suggestion the invitation would never have been extended to me), just before I started for New York, Mr. Moody drove up to my house and said: "Torrey, they want you to preach at the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York. It is a great big church, cost a million dollars to build it." Then he continued: "Torrey, I just want to ask one thing of you. I want to tell you what to preach about. You will preach that sermon of yours on 'Ten Reasons Why I Believe the Bible to Be the Word of God' and your sermon on 'The Baptism With the Holy Ghost.'"

Time and again, when a call came to me to go off to some church, he would come up to me and say: "Now, Torrey, be sure and preach on the baptism with the Holy Ghost." I do not know how many times he said that to me. Once I asked him: "Mr. Moody, don't you think I have any sermons but those two: 'Ten Reasons Why I Believe the Bible to Be the Word of God' and 'The Baptism With the Holy Ghost'?" "Never mind that," he replied, "you give them those two sermons.

Once he had some teachers at Northfield — fine men, all of them, but they did not believe in a definite baptism with the Holy Ghost for the individual. They believed that every child of God was baptized with the Holy Ghost, and they did not believe in any special baptism with the Holy Ghost for the individual. Mr. Moody came to me and said: "Torrey, will you come up to my house after the meeting tonight and I will get those men to come, and I want you to talk this thing out with them."

Of course, I very readily consented, and Mr. Moody and I talked for a long time, but they did not altogether see eye to eye with us. And when they went, Mr. Moody signaled me to remain for a few moments. Mr. Moody sat there with his chin on his breast, as he so often sat when he was in deep thought; then he looked up and said: "Oh, why will they split hairs? Why don't they see that this is just the one thing that they themselves need? They are good teachers, they are wonderful teachers, and I am so glad to have them here; but why will they not see that the baptism with the Holy Ghost is just the one touch that they themselves need?"

I shall never forget the eighth of July, 1894, to my dying day. It was the closing day of the Northfield Students' Conference -- the gathering of the students from the eastern colleges. Mr. Moody had asked me to preach on Saturday night and Sunday morning on the baptism with the Holy Ghost. On Saturday night I had spoken about, "The Baptism With the Holy Ghost: What It Is; What It Does; the Need of It and the Possibility of It." On Sunday morning I spoke on "The Baptism With the Holy Spirit: How to Get It." It was just exactly twelve o'clock when I finished my morning sermon, and I took out my watch and said: "Mr. Moody has invited us all to go up to the mountain at three o'clock this afternoon to pray for the power of the Holy Spirit. It is three hours to three o'clock. Some of you cannot wait three hours. You do not need to wait. Go to your rooms; go out into the woods; go to your tent; go anywhere where you can get alone with God and have this matter out with Him."

At three o'clock we all gathered in front of Mr. Moody's mother's house (she was then still living), and then began to pass down the lane, through the gate, up on the mountainside. There were four hundred and fifty-six of us in all; I know the number because Paul Moody counted us as we passed through the gate.

After a while Mr. Moody said: "I don't think we need to go any further; let us sit down here." We sat down on stumps and logs and on the ground. Mr. Moody said: "Have any of you students anything to say?" I think about seventy-five of them arose, one after the other, and said: "Mr. Moody, I could not wait till three o'clock; I have been alone with God since the morning service, and I believe I have a right to say that I have been baptized with the Holy Spirit."

When these testimonies were over, Mr. Moody said: "Young men, I can't see any reason why we shouldn't kneel down here right now and ask God that the Holy Ghost may fall upon us just as definitely as He fell upon the apostles on the Day of Pentecost. Let us pray." And we did pray, there on the mountainside. As we had gone up the mountainside heavy clouds had been gathering, and just as we began to pray those clouds broke and the raindrops began to fall through the overhanging pines. But there was another cloud that had been gathering over Northfield for ten days, a cloud big with the mercy and grace and power of God; and as we began to pray our prayers seemed to pierce that cloud and the Holy Ghost fell upon us. Men and women, that is what we all need the Baptism with the Holy Ghost.

    21.    The following 3 passages have caused some to question keeping the Sabbath.  Do your best to explain each one and say whether or not you believe the passage impacts Sabbath keeping.

Col 2: 16    Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath days:17        Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.18          Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,19     And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increased with the increase of God.20    Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,21  (Touch not; taste not; handle not;22       Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?23               Which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honor to the satisfying of the flesh.(KJV)                                   Gal 4: 8    Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.9               But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?10   Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.11  I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labor in vain. (KJV)            Rom 14:4 who art thou that judges another man's servant? To his own master he standees or fillet. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.5  One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.6            He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.(KJV)

    22.   How did the apostles expect the Gentiles to learn about the laws of God?

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gen 2:1                Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.2            And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.3         And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.(KJV)

Exod 20: 8            Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy9      Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:10              But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:11                For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.(KJV)

Exod 23:12          Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest: that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed.(KJV)

Lev 23: 2               Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts.3    Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.(KJV)

Deut 5: 14            But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.15   And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.(KJV)

Exod 16: 21         And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted.22           And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.23            And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.24    And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.25        And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the LORD: to day ye shall not find it in the field.26         Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.27               And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none.28And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws? 29             See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.30   So the people rested on the seventh day.(KJV)

Exod 31: 14         Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.15          Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.16   Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.17          It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.18          And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.(KJV)

Num 15: 32         And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day.33 And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation.34               And they put him in ward, because it was not declared what should be done to him. 35 And the LORD said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp.36               And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the LORD commanded Moses.(KJV)

Neh 10:31            And if the people of the land bring ware or any victuals on the sabbath day to sell, that we would not buy it of them on the sabbath, or on the holy day: and that we would leave the seventh year, and the exaction of every debt.(KJV)

Neh 13: 15           In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals.16              There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.17                Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?18                Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.19           And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.20 So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice.21         Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath.(KJV)

Isa 56: 1                Thus saith the LORD, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed. 2                Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil.3          Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the LORD, speak, saying, The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree.4     For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant;5  Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.6             Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant;7           Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall(KJV)

Isa 58: 13              If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:14         Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.(KJV)

Isa 66: 22              For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.23             And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD. (KJV)

Jer 17: 21             Thus saith the LORD; Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem;22            Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.23   But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction.24            And it shall come to pass, if ye diligently hearken unto me, saith the LORD, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the sabbath day, but hallow the sabbath day, to do no work therein;25   Then shall there enter into the gates of this city kings and princes sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they, and their princes, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and this city shall remain for ever.26                And they shall come from the cities of Judah, and from the places about Jerusalem, and from the land of Benjamin, and from the plain, and from the mountains, and from the south, bringing burnt offerings, and sacrifices, and meat offerings, and incense, and bringing sacrifices of praise, unto the house of the LORD. 27      But if ye will not hearken unto me to hallow the sabbath day, and not to bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day; then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.(KJV)

Amos 8: 4            Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail,5   Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit?6      That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; yea, and sell the refuse of the wheat?7    The LORD hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works.

    Matt 12:1             At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.2       But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.3     But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;

4              How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?5             Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?6             But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.7           But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.

8              For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.9     And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue:10    And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.11       And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?12             How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.13        Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.

Matt 28:1             In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.2          And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.(KJV)

Mark 1:2121       And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught. {rb this is referring to Jesus teaching}  (KJV)

Mark 3:1              And he entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a withered hand.2       And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse him.3            And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth.

4              And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.5           And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.(KJV)

Mark 6:2              And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? { rb this is referring to Jesus} (KJV)

    Luke 4: 31            And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.32            And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power. {rb re: Jesus}

Luke 13: 11          And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.12     And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.13    And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.14                And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.15         The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?16  And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?17 And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.(KJV)

Luke 23: 56          And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.(KJV)

John 5: 8              Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.9  And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.10  The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.11    He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.12 Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?13                And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.14      Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.15     The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.16             And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.17         But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.18   Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.19           Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also(KJV)

John 7: 22            Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.23              If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?24     Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.(KJV)

John 9: 10            Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened? 11              He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.12                Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.13    They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.14           And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.15                Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.16   Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.(KJV)

Acts 13: 13           Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem.14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down.15  And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.16             Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience.(KJV)

Acts 13: 26           Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent.27     For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him.(KJV)

Acts 13: 42           And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.(KJV)

Acts 13: 43           Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.44  And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.(KJV)

Acts 15: 19           Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.21     For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.(KJV)

Acts 16:13            And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.14     And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.15                And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.(KJV)

Acts 17: 1             Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:2              And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,3       Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.(KJV)

Acts 18: 1             After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth;2    And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them.3        And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers.4                And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.(KJV)

Acts 13: 13           Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem.14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down.15  And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.(KJV)

    1.          If we want the Holy Spirit to live in our spirit, how do we receive that blessing?  WHO is the Holy Spirit?

John 3:1               There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:2        The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.3   Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.4              Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?5    Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.6      That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.7          Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.8                The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.9          Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?10      Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?11                Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.12          If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?13                And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.14           And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:15         That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.16               For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.17              For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.18            He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.19            And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.20          For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.21            But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.(KJV)

Acts 2: 37             Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?38            Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.39           For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.(KJV)

Gal 3: 26               For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.27          For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.)          John 15: 1   I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.3    Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.4       Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.5   I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.6   If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.7           If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.8     Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.9            As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.10          If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.11               These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.12  This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.13  Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.14             Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you…….26           But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:27  And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.                         Acts 5: 29   Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.31                Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.32    And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.(KJV)               Rom 8: 2           For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.3    For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:4       That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.5                For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.7           Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.8                So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.9   But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.(KJV)           John 14: 23          Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.  (KJV)

    2.         What is the fruit of the Spirit?  What would my life look like if I do NOT have the fruit of the Spirit; Define each fruit listed in Galatians 5: 22 & 23.   Explain Galatians 5: 24&25.  Think of a situation in which YOU manifested each fruit listed and briefly describe that incident. How do we make sure we keep producing fruit?(see the   The parable of the sower in Matt 13)  What part does God play in our fruit production?  What do we do if it is obvious we are having problems producing the fruit of the Spirit? What can be said about someone who says they are saved, they have faithfully attended their local, Bible believing church for five years;however, there is little or no evidence of the fruit of the Spirit in their life?                   Gal 5: 16            This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.17   For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.18       But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.19               Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,20          Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,21            Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,23           Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.24      And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.25            If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.26             Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.(KJV)                                  Eph 5:  9             (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

    3.        What is the baptism in the Holy Spirit? Do we need this in order to be a Christian? What  do you believe the Lord thinks about someone who knows about the baptism and does not want it?  What do YOU think about that?  How do we receive the baptism in the Spirit?  What is the evidence of having received the baptism in the Spirit?  What power should we have when we are baptized in the Holy Spirit?          Mark 16: 16              He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.17               And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;18               They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.19             So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.20  And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.        Luke 24: 44   And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.45      Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,46        And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:47   And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.48           And ye are witnesses of these things.49               And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.50       And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.51          And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.52   And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:53             And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.

Acts 1: 4          And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.5  For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.6     When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?7      And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.8   But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.9  And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

Acts 2: 1       And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.2      And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.3                And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.4     And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.5              And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.6        Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.7                And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?8                And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?9         Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,10          Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,11        Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.12             And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?13    Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.14                But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:15            For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.16          But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;17               And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:18           And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:19    And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:20                The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:21And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.(KJV)

Acts 10: 38           How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.39            And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:40      Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;41                Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.42            And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.43        To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.44     While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.46                For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,47   Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?48              And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.(KJV)

Acts 19: 2             He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.3            And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.4     Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.5         When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.6              And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

What is the value of speaking in tongues?  Romans 8:26              Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.27          And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.                              Jude 1: 20          But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,(KJV)

      4.  What are the gifts of the Spirit? List and define the gifts?  To whom are the gifts of the Spirit available? .   What offices did He set in the body?  What is the difference between receiving (a) gift(s) or an office? Could a person have more than one gift or office? How do you know that?  Acts 6:8  And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.         Mark 16: 15               And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.16        He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.17         And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;18               They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.19        So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.20       And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.                            1 Cor 12:1        Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.2           Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.3               Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.4             Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.5      And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

6              And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.8               For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;9               To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;10    To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:11    But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.12        For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.13     For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit……27         Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.28              And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.29        Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?30      Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?31             But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

1 Cor 14:1Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.2           For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.3        But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.4         He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.5               I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.6        Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?7              And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?8        For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?9       So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.10              There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.12               Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.13      Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.14    For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.15                What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?17        For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.18             I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:19             Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.20          Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.21            In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.22       Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.23              If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?24     But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:25        And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.26                How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a octrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.27              If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.28                But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.29            Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.30  If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace31               For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.32       And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.33       For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.39      Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.40          Let all things be done decently and in order.(KJV)

    Rom 12:1             I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.2   And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.3  For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.4       For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:5        So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.6   Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;

7              Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;8     Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.9  Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.10           Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;11     Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;(KJV)

Eph 4: 7                But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.8  Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.9           (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?10      He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;12                For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:13               Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:(KJV)

5  What is the purpose of prophesying?  1Thes 5:11      Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.  See 1 Corinthians 14 above in # 4.

    6.  Describe what happens if people pretend to have the Spirit of Christ but are actually false brethren (both those who say they are baptized in the Holy Spirit and those who say they are believers). What is the fate of that person when they meet up with the Lord ?

Matt 25:1             Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.2                And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.3       They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:4      But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.5                While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.6     And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.7            Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.8                And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.9        But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.10    And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.11                Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.12     But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.13          Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.…..31       When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:32   And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:33               And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.34              Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:35         For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:36      Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.37       Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?38               When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?39               Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?40                And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.41    Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:42      For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.44               Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?45                Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.46       And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Matt 7: 15            Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.16                Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?17               Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.18         A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.19          Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.20  Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.21               Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

22           Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?23              And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.24              Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:25        And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.26       And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:27                And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.28          And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:29         For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Acts 5:1                But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,2     And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.3   But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?4   Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.5   And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.6         And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.(KJV)

Acts 8:9                But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:10    To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God.11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.12           But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.13      Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.14                Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:15               Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:16              (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)17                Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.18             And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,19  Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.20        But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.21                Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.22                Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.23        For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.24   Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.

Titus 1: 16            They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.          Heb 6:7   For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:8           But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.9         But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.10       For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.11         And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:12  That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. (KJV)

    7.         Read the verses below and tell what they say about who the Holy Spirit is and/or what He does.  If there are other verses that make Him more plain to you, share them here. John 14: 12           Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father13        And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.14    If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.15              If ye love me, keep my commandments.16               And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.18     I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.19  Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.20    At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.21    He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.22              Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?23   Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.24   He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.25        These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.26              But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.27      Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.28              Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I .

See  John  15 again to meditate on what the Spirit does in our lives.

Gal 6: 7               Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.8     For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.(KJV)

1 Pet 1: 22           Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:23   Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.       I Jn 3: 8                He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.9        Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.10     In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

I Jn 5:.2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.3  For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.4            For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

5              Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?6         This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.7        For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

I Jn 2:27                But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.28 And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.29   If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

Micah 3:8             But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin.(KJV)

    John 16:7Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.8             And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:9      Of sin, because they believe not on me;10           Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

11           Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.12         I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.13            Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.14                He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.15           All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.(KJV)                              John 17: 17    Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.18   As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.19              And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.20        Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;21             That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.22                And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:23    I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.24    Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.25            O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.26   And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.(KJV)

Mark 1: 17And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.

Acts 26: 15And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.16    But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;17        Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,18    To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.(KJV)

2 Cor 13: 14         The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.(KJV)

John 4: 14            But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

John 7: 37            In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.38   He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.39              (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

John 14: 15If ye love me, keep my commandments16    And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.18               I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you19              Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.20          At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.21    He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.(KJV)

Rom 8:9                But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.10          And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.11      But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.12               Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.13       For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.14      For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.15          For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.16        The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with

1 Cor 12: 13         For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.14           For the body is not one member, but many.(KJV)

Eph 2: 14              For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;….16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:17              And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.18    For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

19           Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;21              In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:22           In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.(KJV)

I Jn 1:1  That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;2               (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)3           That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.4                And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.5                This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6               If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

7              But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.(KJV)

I Jn 3: 22               And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.23  And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.(KJV)

Gal 6: 18               Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

2 Tim 4: 22           The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.

Phile 1: 3              Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Rev 22: 20            He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.21             The grace  (charis: one meaning: the Divine influence on the heart) of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.(KJV)

Eph 4:30               And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

1Thes 5: 19          Quench not the Spirit……23         And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.24      Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

1 Tim 4: 14           Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

Titus 2: 12            Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;13     Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;14              Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

2 Cor 1: 3              Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;4            Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

1Thes 5:23           And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.(KJV)

Rom 15: 13          Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

II Th 3:16Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.

Heb 13: 20           Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,21            Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

1 Pet 5: 10           But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.(KJV)

2 Cor 13: 11         Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.(KJV)

II Th 2: 16             Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,17              Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.(KJV)

Jude 1: 24            Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,25         To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.(KJV)

Col 1: 27               To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:28       Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:29Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.

Jude 1: 24            Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,25         To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.(KJV)

  • The Shepherds and the King song (Silver Bells tune)

Start with G in the key of G (i.e., 1 sharp: F); The song:   The Shepherds  the King; Tune: Silver Bells; Lyrics Rosemary Barnes

There were shepherds on a hillside in the dark of the night. Then  an  angel appeared unto them.

Next  the   field  was  filled with glory, The angel said  not to fear. “I bring  good news:  Your  Messiah is born.”

    Now He is                                            in Bethlehem.

You  will  find Him in a manger.

He is   Savior .                              He is  Lord.

He’ll bring  good will to the world.

The starry sky filled with many angels giving glory to God, Saying peace had come into the earth.

God in the highest was showing kindness unto  all of mankind. Our  Savior’s birth was news of great joy.

They went to see…… Jesus,……………….following words from their God,

They were transformed -- filled with such joy.

    Guests at the first Christmastime.

The shepherds went forth telling this  news  To  everyone who would hear.

Word spread around  and   the people were awed,  Filled with wonder about this message coming straight from  their  God   Through  lowly shepherds heralding their  King.

The message from them………… is a message for  us,

We have been given a Savior,

He is the Lord,……… anointed of God.

He is  the soon coming King.

    Now let’s  sing: The chorus of The King is coming (probable authors: The Gaithers):     O the King is coming, The King is coming! I just heard the trumpets sounding, And now His face I see;
O the King is coming, The King is coming! Praise God, He's coming for me!

  • santa?

PLEASE, ROL, I repeat the following thoughts yearly but I don't get a whole lot of feedback. I want to know if the people I pastor {and I wonder what other Christians think too}...those to whom I must give account to the Lord -- are listening and  if they are agreeing (if not, why not) on the following: (This is something I wrote a mom today when she asked what to tell her very young kids about Santa -- she asked on a Face book post to anyone who would answer):

"Tell them openly, gently , lovingly to pray for all the kids believing in what is apparently a pagan deity....who but a demon god could be all knowing, omnipresent (on Christmas eve all over the world), and omnipotent (how else would he make it from the Arctic to all over the world in one night?).  Tell them no fireplace stockings...it implies waiting for this anti christ  to come into their home...the one drawing attention from Jesus Christ to himself.

Start now making sure they "come out from among them and touch not the unclean thing"....
I am SO grieved that so many Christians are so blind about what this does to our kids.
If they start being politically incorrect now and take on the spirit of Elijah/John the Baptist ,  i.e., preparing hearts for the Lord to take up residence there...then perhaps they will be rooted enough to STAND for the Lord when faced with sex/drugs, etc. as teens!!!!!
Ok...my thinking clearly shows you why River of Life is not a huge, "acceptable" church. BUT: " Broad is the way to destruction and narrow is the way to life"!!!!
    -------------------
I would LOVE to hear ALL of you tell me  your thoughts on the above statement; however, if you just respond with ONE WORD Yes" ....I know you agree; If "maybe" I know you have some reservations (and I may ask you in person "why"), and if you say "no" I would love to hear why....if you are silent I will either assume you 1) automatically delete all emails {and/or correspondence) from me ( ) 2) have a broken computer (good reason) 3) you are a coward who hates to take a definitive stand on anything for fear you may have to  a) defend it and be unpopular b) think c) have integrity --i.e., be one person all the time, not 2,3 ,4 faced...well...you figure out your own reason...  If I am your pastor at ROL OR even if you are a fellow brother or sister in the Lord,  IF you are thinking it is none of my business to know, tell me why you think that too.  I think it is the job of ALL of us, not just the pastors, to provoke one another to good works, no? That fact comes straight from the Bible.

As  I share things we Christians ought to do/ be (e.g., family devotions, no Halloween, no demonic music...etc....) it gets frustrating not getting feedback -- both intelligent feedback  so I can reexamine it to learn more  and (what I would consider to be) ignorant  feedback so I can teach truth  better....

What has been especially frustrating is to teach these things over the years to the people I have pastored in the past or currently pastor and then see someone's social site Christmas picture in front of a fireplace with rows of stockings OR...unthinkable! WITH A MALL SANTA!!!!! But, often these same folks refuse to "defend their faith" in santa, i.e., they refuse to explain exactly why they believe it is ok to tell their kids he is real or even tell them he is just "pretend" but still involve them in the mall Santa ritual!  Would those people  who do the stocking/picture with Santa things please enlighten me if I am missing something here!
I am NOT being sarcastic -- I honestly, truly, with an open heart am trying to figure out how a Christian can justify lying to kids about santa or even letting santa share ONE MOMENT with the birthday party for our precious Lord!  I truly want to know what thoughts come to mind that causes a Christian to be at peace with that.
