    Solomon seeks wisdom:

    Eccl 1:12 I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.13 And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.KJV

    What is vanity?

    Vanity:OT:1892 hebel (heh'bel); or (rarely in the abs.) habel (hab-ale'); from OT:1891; emptiness or vanity; figuratively, something transitory and unsatisfactory; often used as an adverb:

    1. No Satisfaction in Wealth    Eccl 6:1 I have seen another evil under the sun, and it weighs heavily on men: 2 God gives a man wealth, possessions and honor, so that he lacks nothing his heart desires, but God does not enable him to enjoy them, and a stranger enjoys them instead. This is meaningless, a grievous evil. NIV

    Eccl 5:10 Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless. 11 As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owner except to feast his eyes on them? 12 The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether he eats little or much, but the abundance of a rich man permits him no sleep. 13 I have seen a grievous evil under the sun: wealth hoarded to the harm of its owner,  14 or wealth lost through some misfortune, so that when he has a son there is nothing left for him. 15 Naked a man comes from his mother's womb, and as he comes, so he departs. He takes nothing from his labor that he can carry in his hand. 16 This too is a grievous evil:

    As a man comes, so he departs, and what does he gain, since he toils for the wind? 17 All his days he eats in darkness, with great frustration, affliction and anger.

    18 Then I realized that it is good and proper for a man to eat and drink, and to find satisfaction in his toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given him — for this is his lot. 19 Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work — this is a gift of God. 20 He seldom reflects on the days of his life, because God keeps him occupied with gladness of heart.     2. No Satisfaction in Children           6:3 A man may have a hundred children and live many years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he cannot enjoy his prosperity and does not receive proper burial, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he. 4 It comes without meaning, it departs in darkness, and in darkness its name is shrouded. 5 Though it never saw the sun or knew anything, it has more rest than does that man— 6 even if he lives a thousand years twice over but fails to enjoy his prosperity. Do not all go to the same place? NIV

     

                3. No Satisfaction in Labor    6:7-8   

    Eccl 6:7 All man's efforts are for his mouth, yet his appetite is never satisfied. NIV

    4. No Satisfaction in the Future        Eccl 6: 10 Whatever exists has already been named, and what man is has been known; no man can contend with one who is stronger than he.

    11 The more the words, the less the meaning, and how does that profit anyone?

    12 For who knows what is good for a man in life, during the few and meaningless days he passes through like a shadow? Who can tell him what will happen under the sun after he is gone? NIV

    Eccl 4:4 And I saw that all labor and all achievement spring from man's envy of his neighbor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. 5 The fool folds his hands and ruins himself. 6 Better one handful with tranquillity than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind. 7 Again I saw something meaningless under the sun: 8 There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother. There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth. "For whom am I toiling," he asked, "and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?" This too is meaningless —

    Part Three: The Counsel for Living with Vanity (7:1—12:14)

    What follows are some of the thing in the books of 7 through 12: as well as some wisdom from other sources in Eccl too

    Eccl 5:1 Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.

    2 Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.

    3 For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool's voice is known by multitude of words.4 When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed.5 Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.KJV

    Eccl 7:26 And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.KJV

     

    Eccl 8:15 Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.KJV

     

    Eccl 9:7 Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.8 Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.9 Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.KJV

     

    Eccl 10: 10:1 Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.KJV

     

    Eccl 10:18 By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.19 A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.KJV

     

     

    The end of the matter:

    Eccl 12::1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

    2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:

    3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,

    4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;

    5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:

    6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.

    7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

    8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.

    9 And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.

    10 The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.

    11 The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.

    12 And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

    13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

    Group Deliverance:

    First we will do this as a group.  Feel free to state something along with a given item that you believe also should be addressed.  Also, feel free to move in the gifts of the Spirit , especially in discernment and faith and  prophetic insights.

    After we are done going through these things as a group, we will break into very small groups to deal with whatever may still need to be addressed.

    . 1.  Repent of leaving first love –   On the survey sheets I saw quite a few “I used to ____________” concerning Christian disciplines.

    Rev 2: 4 Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love . 5 Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.NIV

    3.  Forgiveness of self.  Forgiveness of others. Prayers to bless those who abused us.  A release of all anger, bitterness, revenge, etc.

    John 15:20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.KJV

    Rom 12: 19 Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:

    "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.

    4.  Infirmity.  Here we especially will deal with what Don Basham calls the “ruse of heredity”.  

    5. Addictions:  Shopping, substance abuse, inordinate amounts of sleep, TV , food (we will include gluttony here

    6.  Sexual issues:  Past victimization, current thought patterns seemingly impossible to relinquish, etc.

    7.   ESCAPE:  A withdrawal from life because of disappointment, failure, sickness – hopelessness.   Also, we will address  too much TV (or computer, or any other media to “get lost into”) here …

    8. Rejection:   From parents, from self, etc.   Totally feeling disconnected with others, seldom “fitting in”  .   Feeling of rejection from God as a result of “never measuring up” and/or repeatedly disappointing Him. 

    9. Distrust of God’s love and His promises

    10.  Refusal to share gifts/talents with the local church.  Selfishness. Laziness. Fear.  Perfectionism. “Some day I will be outstanding and I don’t want to share until I am”

    Matt 25:23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents .29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.KJV

    11. Indecision, mental fog, confusion, procrastination

    12.  Besetting sins – both what we want to overcome and those we pet and excuse

    13. Fear—of man, of falling away from God, of poverty, of abandonment….

    1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment . He that feareth is not made perfect in love. KJV

    Prov 29:25 Fear of man will prove to be a snare,but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe. NIV

    Renounce FEAR as sin – it is the opposite of FAITH

    Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.KJV

    Rev 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.KJV

    Luke 12:4 And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.KJV

    Josh 1:6 "Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. 7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.     Heb 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

    13.  Suicide, murder:  Repent of any thoughts of doing suicide or any past attempts. This is the ultimate act of distrust! 

    14.  Sleep issues:  Sleeplessness, attacks during sleep

    Ps 4:8 I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep : for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.KJV

    Ps 127:2 It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep .KJV

    15.  Depression, sadness

    Is 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.KJV

    1 John 3:7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. 9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother.

    11 This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother's were righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him. NIV

     

    John 10: 10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy : I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.KJV

     

    The devil’s nature is totally wicked

    A liar and a murderer:

     John 8:42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me? 47 He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God."  48 The Jews answered him, "Aren't we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?" 49 "I am not possessed by a demon," said Jesus, "but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death."  NIV

    PROUD, self willed , presumptuous:

    Isa 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

    13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

    14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

    15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

    16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

    The antichrist will reflect that same nature:

    2 Thess 2:1 Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers, 2 not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by some prophecy, report or letter supposed to have come from us, saying that the day of the Lord has already come. 3 Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. 4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God. NIV

     

    Occult practices forbidden:

    Deut 18:9 When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. 13 You must be blameless before the LORD your God.

    14 The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do so. NIV

     

    God’s anger when we align ourselves with evil:

    Ps 106:28 28 They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods; 29 they provoked the LORD to anger by their wicked deeds,and a plague broke out among them. …………..

    34 They did not destroy the peoples as the LORD had commanded them, 35 but they mingled with the nations and adopted their customs. 36 They worshiped their idols,which became a snare to them. 37 They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons. 38 They shed innocent blood,the blood of their sons and daughters,whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,and the land was desecrated by their blood. 39 They defiled themselves by what they did;by their deeds they prostituted themselves. 40 Therefore the LORD was angry with his people and abhorred his inheritance. 41 He handed them over to the nations,and their foes ruled over them. 42 Their enemies oppressed them and subjected them to their power. 43 Many times he delivered them,but they were bent on rebellion and they wasted away in their sin.

    44 But he took note of their distress when he heard their cry; 45 for their sake he remembered his covenant and out of his great love he relented. 46 He caused them to be pitied by all who held them captive.

    47 Save us, O LORD our God,and gather us from the nations,that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise. NIV

     

    1 Cor 10: 20 No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord's table and the table of demons. 22 Are we trying to arouse

    The devil’s typical temptations:

    Matt 4:1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." 4 Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" 

    5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: "'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'" 7 Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"  8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me."

    10 Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'"  11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. NIV

    There are deceiving spirits:

    1 Tim 4:1 The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. 3 They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. 4 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.

    Satan can enter and urge someone to do wrong:

    Luke 22:1 Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.2 And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.3 Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.4 And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.5 And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.6 And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.KJV

     

    The demons know who Jesus is.  The demons have personalities: Feelings, decisions, and thoughts:

    Matt 8: 28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 "What do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?" 30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs." 32 He said to them, "Go!" So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region. NIV

    Luke 4:40 When the sun was setting, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them. 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Christ.   NIV


    Some physical illnesses are demonic

    Matt 9:32 While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel." NIV

     

    Matt 12:22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. 23 All the people were astonished and said, "Could this be the Son of David?"

     

    If we don’t make sure we FILL ourselves with the Lord, the spirit will come back taking others with him:

    Luke 11:24 "When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' 25 When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. 26 Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first."  NIV

     

    Deliverance belongs to the children in covenant with the Lord:

    Matt 15: 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession." 23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us." 24 He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel." 25 The woman came and knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said. 26 He replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs." 

    27 "Yes, Lord," she said, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." 28 Then Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed from that very hour. NIV

    God can use evil spirits as He wills to do so:

    1 Sam 16:14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

    16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.19 Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.

    20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.KJV

     

    Judg 9:22 After Abimelech had governed Israel three years, 23 God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the citizens of Shechem, who acted treacherously against Abimelech. 24 God did this in order that the crime against Jerub-Baal's seventy sons, the shedding of their blood, might be avenged on their brother Abimelech and on the citizens of Shechem, who had helped him murder his brothers. 25 In opposition to him these citizens of Shechem set men on the hilltops to ambush and rob everyone who passed by, and this was reported to Abimelech. NIV

     

    1 Kings 22:18 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "Didn't I tell you that he never prophesies anything good about me, but only bad?"

    19 Micaiah continued, "Therefore hear the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on his throne with all the host of heaven standing around him on his right and on his left. 20 And the LORD said, 'Who will entice Ahab into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?'

    "One suggested this, and another that. 21 Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the LORD and said, 'I will entice him.' 22 " 'By what means?' the LORD asked. " 'I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,' he said. " 'You will succeed in enticing him,' said the LORD. 'Go and do it.' 23 "So now the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours. The LORD has decreed disaster for you."

     

    Seizures can be demonic; also, we can see a demon by what it does to the person; it takes faith to cast out demons:

    Matt 17:14 When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. 15 "Lord, have mercy on my son," he said. "He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. 16 I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him." 17 "O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me."  18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment.

    19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it out?" 20 He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."  NIV

     

    Mark 9:17 A man in the crowd answered, "Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not." 19 "O unbelieving generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me." 20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. 21 Jesus asked the boy's father, "How long has he been like this?" "From childhood," he answered. 22 "It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us." 23 "'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes."  24 Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!" 25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the evil spirit. "You deaf and mute spirit," he said, "I command you, come out of him and never enter him again." 

    26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, "He's dead." 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up. 28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn't we drive it out?" 29 He replied, "This kind can come out only by prayer."  NIV

     

    Luke 9:37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38 A man in the crowd called out, "Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not." 41 "O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here."  42 Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the evil spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. NIV

     

    Jesus taught and a spirit yelled out;  Jesus dealt with him then and there in public

    Mark 1:21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, 24 "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!" 25 "Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!"  26 The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.

    27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching — and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him." 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee. NIV

     

    Luke 4:33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an evil spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 "Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!" 35 "Be quiet!" Jesus said sternly. "Come out of him!" Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him. 36 All the people were amazed and said to each other, "What is this teaching? With authority and power he gives orders to evil spirits and they come out!" 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area. NIV

     

    Just because some one had a bunch of demons does not mean they can’t become a minister of God; plus, the Word freely notes Mary’s former state…it is a testimony that gives hope

    Mark 16: 9When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. 10 She went and told those who had been with him and who were mourning and weeping. 11 When they heard that Jesus was alive and that she had seen him, they did not believe it. NIV

     

    Luke 8:1 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; 3 Joanna the wife of Cuza, the manager of Herod's household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means. NIV

     

    People brought their demon possessed friends to Jesus

    Matt 8:16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

    "He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases."  NIV

     

    Jesus gave His disciples authority to cast out spirits:

    Matt 10:1 He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. NIV

    He told them that all believers would cast out demons:

    Mark 16:14 Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen. 15 He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well."  19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. 20 Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it. NIV

     

    Philip, a deacon evangelist, cast out demons:

    Acts 8:4 Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. 5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ there. 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs he did, they all paid close attention to what he said. 7 With shrieks, evil spirits came out of many, and many paralytics and cripples were healed. 8 So there was great joy in that city. NIV

     

    But we only have power to expel demons if we truly know the  Lord:

    Acts 19:13 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed.   • Deliverance and Counseling Form I am sharing at ROL this week

    I  wrote this paper years ago and then I edited it again today.  It reflects several decades (actually since the early '70's) of both getting and ministering  counsel and deliverance. Furthermore, I have been a student of the years of many great counseling ministers: Cal and Loie Bergsma, Ruth Herrema, Derek Prince, Bob Mumford, The Sanfords, Peter and Doris Wagner, Hobart Freeman -- and I am sure there are others not coming to mind right now. But, this paper I wrote without quoting anyone else -- even though it is impossible to write what I know without bringing forth the principles I have received from others along with those that came from hard won experience. How can anyone sort through which is which? That is why I want to make sure I honor some of my outstanding teachers along the way.

    Any Christian brother or sister  is free to use this paper in ministering to the body of Christ!!!

    Part one:  Introduction: What we believe has everything to do with what is in our body , soul, and spirit both of the good things of the Lord and the bad things of the devil.  

     Although our church brochure needs some updating ( basically in adding some topics; e.g.,  Sabbath and our Jewish roots, not an “updating” in regard to doctrines already established in there), we will still use the current one for the questions in this first part. Thoroughly study once more the  River of Life Ministries Brochure and then answer (and comment if appropriate) on the questions below. Our belief statement is on riveroflifegrmi.org.

    The people  we can effectively  help with the issues addressed here in this paper in part two   are those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and those who believe the Bible to be the infallible Word of God.

      Please include the question  on your response paper  so the reader does not have to refer back to the paper to understand what you are answering

     A)  Do you give tithes and offerings faithfully? If not, Why?

     B)  Do you operate in any of the Gifts of the Spirit?  -Which one(s)?  What Gift() are you asking the Lord for?   Why? If you are not asking God for any Gifts(s), why not?

     C)  When we worship together as a Church, do you actively clap, make a joyful noise unto the Lord, dance, raise your hands in Worship?  If not, why not?

     D)  -How often do you pray in the Spirit?  Daily? Hourly? How many minutes or hours per day (make an estimate)? If you do not, why not? Since you have been baptized in the Holy Spirit, have you walked in that boldness to be a witness to others that has been place by God inside of you?  If not, why not?   If you have not yet received the baptism in the Spirit, how diligently are you seeking the Lord for Him to fill you to overflowing with His Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues?  If you have not persisted in asking for Him to do this, why not?

    E)   How many hours a week do you have devotions?  Do you have a normal time and place for this?  Do you have a good balance of prayer, praise and Bible study?  Do you pray for others--even those outside your own little personal world more often than you do for yourself?

     Do you ever go into travail in your prayer time?  How often? Are there ever times when the Bible is totally "closed" to your understanding? What do you do  if this happens?

     F)  As you read about our policy on Pastoral Counseling time, what is your response to our stand? Do you agree or disagree with it?  What role do you believe you have in "working out your own salvation with fear and trembling?" What role does the Body of Christ have in assisting you?  What role do the pastors and other leadership have in helping you? Even if you do agree with the truth of our stand, is there anything within you that resents the responsibility that gives  you?  If so, why do you suppose you feel this way?   G)  Do you get up periodically in open pulpit?  Are you glad to do this?  If you do not, why not?  Are there gifts/talents that you know are within you to bless the Body of Christ that you are not sharing?  What are they? Why do you suppose you are withholding them?  Do you have problems with the fact we want you to dress a certain way before getting on the platform ?

    H) If you are a woman, do you really believe that you are free to become anything in the Body of Christ? Are there any roles you feel inhibited in because you are a woman? If so, what are they?   Do you have any resentment concerning your womanhood and the barriers society sometimes places in your path?  Do you resent (or judge to be “out of order”) other women who seem to feel no inhibitions about coming forth boldly in the Christian gatherings ?    Do you quietly defer to a man  to do something even when you (humbly) know what you have to offer would better serve the Body of Christ?

    Is there anything in you that would want to enter into an aggressive contest with men and you gleefully keep score whenever a woman is "one up" on a man?

    Do you enjoy "woman only" groups and settings so as to avoid any God-given, proper male authority?

    Do you see your brothers with compassion, knowing that they too hurt and need acceptance and encouragement, or do you think of them as having everything and trying to keep them from the satisfaction of getting any more success and recognition that they already enjoy?  

    When you think of having a (or your) husband,                -do you think  mainly of what you can get from him (home, children, financial security, etc.)?

    Or,  do you think what you can give to him (nurturing, a home, love, physical love, joy, communication, companionship, understanding, etc) ?

    If you are  a man, answer the above two questions with a wife in mind.

    If you are a man, do you have any reservations about a woman being anything she has the gifts, talents, and character to be in the Body of Christ?

    Question for everyone: Would you find it hard to take orders from a woman (e.g., on your secular job or in the military or in church)?

    Men:  Do you have a need to put women in a certain inferior place (i.e., to make less money, to have less to say, to get lower grades, or to receive less favor than you or another man)? 

    Is there anything in you that would rather just let a woman take responsibility for most everything even if that means her getting all the rewards due her for being the more  responsible person?

    If married, do you find it hard to respect the wishes, feelings, and opinions of your wife?

    Is it hard for you to treat a woman as a person as opposed to a role (mom, homemaker, secretary, etc.)  and/or a sexual object?

    If a woman is "right" in public when you were one who expressed a contrary opinion, would you find yourself becoming angry to be "shown up" by a woman or would you be glad that truth was arrived at?

    Brother, or sister, pray and ask the Lord --even beyond these brief questions--to examine your heart and show you any deep seated gender issues that  you may be harboring which may be keeping you and/or others in bondage!

     I)   Do you really believe all believers have been given a role in the Body of Christ or do you tend to believe it is alright for some to "watch" while others "perform"?

    What is the role (or roles) that the Lord has called you to in His Church? Are you either working on coming forth in your place or  are you basically doing it already?  If not, what are you waiting on?

     J)   Do you sincerely believe that Christians have been given the power to expel evil spirits from others?

    Do you believe that a Christian can need deliverance?

    Do you believe in actual evil personalities, called demons, in and around us at work to propagate the kingdom of darkness in the world today?

    Do you fully understand what the armor of the Lord is? See Ephesians 6.  Do you know how to keep (ALL the time) each part  of the armor on yourself?

    Are you aware daily of the need to be sober and watchful in your life to guard against the attacks of the enemy?

    Are you aware of the presence of the Lord and His Angels to protect you?   Are these things real to you?

     

    Part two: Introduction:

    There will be times we only ask you to fill out  part two of this paper  and other times we will want both parts fully completed.  We will always want you to review part one as a tool of examination .
    Sometimes  we  will ask you to meditate on everything in here , but, then  fill out only what you believe currently applies to your situation.  

    Always complete # 3.

    There  may be things you do not want in print for anyone to see. In that space write, “I want to tell this part in person. It is highly confidential”.

     

    Say if you are uncomfortable with any particular person talking/praying with you!

    If  there is a person in our church who you feel at this particular time would be inappropriate for you to share with, let me, Rosemary, know.  E.g., sometimes gender is an issue if the problem is related to highly personal things.

     

    Leaders must explain that the confidentiality shared with them will also be shared with the senior pastors.  If the counselee is unwilling for the senior pastors to be informed,  then the leader is to refrain from dealing with that person in the area that the person is unwilling to open up the information to the Pastors.

    (That counselee could , at that point, be referred to any Christian counseling agency to  go to share their secrets.)

     

    All  of our leadership is instructed to tell us, Robert and Rosemary, of all counseling and/or deliverance encounters that have to do with  ongoing Christian  maturity and/or character issues. We have told them to say “If you are telling me, you are telling Robert and Rosemary too because I will be sharing these things with them”.

      If we ever have a leader who does not make that plain (in what is obviously a  special time of counsel and/or deliverance), tell us!  Furthermore , any leader who is friends (close or not so close )   with a fellow leader and/or ROL member who has confided serious issues that could be “leaven” in the whole church  (see 1 Corinthians 5), they are expected to tell that to Robert and Rosemary.  Robert and Rosemary are ultimately responsible to give an account to the Lord concerning ROL members (and those only coming to ROL as their local church even if they have not formally “joined”).  Therefore, the leadership must keep Robert and Rosemary informed ; but, Robert and Rosemary may or may not inform the leaders of what all is going on within ROL (as the other leaders don’t have to give “an account “ to the Lord for all the sheep at ROL) .  Robert and Rosemary  most always inform  the pastor(s) of the group that the counselee is in of any significant issues regarding that person.

     

    If a leader is uncomfortable with sharing relevant information with the pastors, then that leader should inform their friends and others  not to share things in a “counselor/counselee” time  that they will be accountable to share  with the pastors in accordance with the above statements!

     

    Extreme “secrets” – both from the past and in the present

    There are some things the local church  people simply never have to know – e.g., if a woman had an abortion when she was 16, has now repented ( and she is now a grown woman), the senior pastors may be told that in a counseling session and they would chose (as they have in the past) to never tell anyone that information.  The same could hold for a homosexual encounter that is now being told years after it happened. We can also  keep totally confidential any reoccurring perverse, sinful fantasies that have never been acted upon nor is the person even expressing a temptation to start acting on these thoughts. They simply want  freedom from sinful  thinking!

    But, active child molesters, murderers, etc. will be reported to the proper authorities. We have not taken the same  vow of confidentiality  that some human services professionals or clergy have taken.   

    Rosemary , as a certified social worker professional , is legally bound to report (immediately)  both suspected and actual child abuse awareness, i.e., an adult perpetrating abuse on a child! Report YOURSELF BEFORE anyone else is forced to do so!  

    Even as pastors, whether we “had to” or not, we do NOT want to be responsible for the well being of a child in a home where abuse has been suspected or reported!  The legal folks have the authority to command the abuser to leave the home; we don’t.

    Other examples that we would probably report , e.g., to parents and/or spouses (or we would INSIST the person report it):  Active fornication (or adultery) , abortion, strong thoughts and/or actions leading to suicide, or  any other issues that obviously put the young ones  or a  home in grave spiritual  and/or natural danger. If the parent(s)  or spouse are definitely abusers themselves (or have demonstrated repetitive , very foolish response to crisis situations), we will have to seek the Lord for wisdom concerning  whether or not to report serious issues  to them.

    We will take ALL complaints of sexual molestation seriously.  At the same time , we will seek earnestly to discover if the complaint is a vengeful lie against the accused -- that HAS happened before! 

    We will also stand WITH the one we think to be abused through all the accusations commonly brought against the one who “blows the whistle”, e.g.,  that they, in fact, brought a disaster on the household by telling the problem.

    Counseling hazards:

    We are painfully aware of some of the issues arising from people unveiling issues. People can lose their positions (in the world, in church, as spouses, etc.), their belongings, and many valuable assets in life simply because they exposed themselves or someone else . But, to carry around awareness of danger to self and others as well as a guilty conscience is not worth ANYTHING!

    It is better to go to jail for life for a murder we confess to than keep  a secret that could land a person in Hell!

    Pray for the ROL ministers too – we often  go through intense spiritual warfare often when we deal with serious issues in the lives of the saints!

    You do not "have to" share anything you are not ready to share; however, realize that the thing you are keeping a secret may be the very key to the "River of Life" flowing from you freely and your walking total victory!

     This form as a tool:

    Anyone  may use this form as a tool to counsel others or to minister deliverance; however, no information can be withheld from the local church  pastors if that information is relevant to the counselee's position and/or influence in the local church, courtship, pending marriage, potential legal difficulty, serious health consideration,  etc.

      

    "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each others so that you may be healed.  The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective."  James 5:16

     "For everyone born of God has overcome the world.  This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith." 1 John 5:4  

     

    Questionnaire regarding deliverance needs

     1)  Age       Age saved    Age Baptized in the Holy Spirit

     2) (Outstanding) previous counseling or deliverance incidences.

     

    3)  Current reasons for need for counsel or deliverance (always answer this one thoroughly).

     4)  What have you done to deal with these things already?

     5)  Have you (or are you) gotten (getting) any counsel (secular or Christian) from another source that ROL?

    Would you go to a new source for help when you have ignored the Godly advice given you already? Have you ever?  Do you get angry when Godly people keep telling you the same , wise solution to your problem(s)?

     6)  Are there people (dead or alive) whom you have not forgiven?  Pray earnestly that the Lord reveal to you anyone whom you still have not released.   It does not matter if they have never said, "I am sorry"; it does not matter how terribly wrong they were --you must forgive everyone to be free from demons!

     7)  Have you been exposed to or participated in the occult? Have you read books, internet material,  or went to movies concerning the occult? E.g., the Harry Potter series? Occult subject material examples:  Astrology, auras, astral projection, hypnotism, past lives (reincarnation), witchcraft, voodoo, Eastern Religions, Mormonism, necromancy (this includes the Catholic practice of praying to dead saints and to Mary!!),  African drumming /dancing pagan ceremonies, Pow Wows, casting spells , “white magic”, etc.

    Have you engaged in occult practices such as             -going to a fortune teller, palmist, spiritualist reader or church, séance, table tipping/raising, astrology, Ouija board, tarot cards, tea leaves reading, etc.  Or, being part of a live audience in a magic show (including “Christian”) , cultural art demonstrations that contain demonic drawings, demonic rituals that can be in some native dances, etc.

     8) Optional and confidential (parts or all)

    (You may choose to discuss rather than record. Consider carefully as strongholds can enter with types of activity described!) 

    Were you sexually abused as a child? Raped at any time? Involved in perversity? Pornography? Prostitution?  Any other sexual irregularities which would leave a deep scar? 

    Do you watch movie scenes depicting fornication , adultery, and/or perverse sexual practices even in “mainstream” theaters (as opposed to “adult “ theaters)?

     Do you have an addiction to masturbation accompanied by perverse  and/or illicit sexual  mental images?    If married, do you have long (over two weeks) periods of time that you have little or no sexual energy or desire?  Or, do you have so much that it causes your spouse to feel used (several times per day).  Is the temptation and/or activity of adultery/fornication an ever present reality in your life?   Are you guilt ridden due to illicit sexual fantasies?

     9) Are you adopted or did you spend time in foster care?   Were you unwanted as an infant?  Did your parents conceive you before they were married (even though they did eventually marry)?

         Have you been part of a broken home?

         Has there been a broken relationship in your life that caused you deep pain?

    10) Have you been physically abused or neglected?

          Have you physically abused or neglected someone else? Are you violent – or, do you have very strong urges to be violent? 

    Are there people (or a person) you abuse verbally?  Do you call anyone cruel or unloving names?

    Is there someone you want to see suffer?

     11) Have you been suicidal? Have you had reoccurring, strong thoughts of suicide or wishing you were dead? Do you know why?   Are you deeply depressed – do you know why?    Do you abuse yourself, e.g., through cuttings or burning? Or, pulling out your hair? Or in any other way?

    Do you have any secret tattoos and/or markings on your body that speak of self hatred and/or destruction? Or, are you often tempted to have such markings? Have you ever allowed anyone else to put degrading marks on you?

          12) Have you had serious illnesses, operations, handicaps of any sort?

    Are you addicted to “doctoring”?  Do you think you prefer being sick and home bound (much of the time) to having to “face life”?   When you read of illnesses, does it often seem as if you share all the same symptoms resulting in your worrying a lot about it?

     13) Are you on medication? If so, what are the effects?

    Do you take any illicit drugs? (We will not ask you to “turn yourself in” for personal , illegal drug usage; however, drug selling is another matter entirely.)

     14)  Do you listen to secular music?  What kind?

    Does the “Christian“ music you listen to “minister” more to your body and soul than to your spirit?  Do you idolize “Christian stars”?   Do the words speak of “ me, me , me” or do they give glory to the grace of God in your life?

    Is there anything in your reading viewing material that you believe may be causing a breach in your spiritual armor? 

    Are you addicted to video games and/or do you waste way too much time playing them? What is the content of the  video games you play?  List the nature of the games you have in your home.

     15)  Do you have any (other) addictions?

             E.g.: Nicotine, alcohol, junk food, gambling, buying, soap operas (or any secular program you MUST always see), inordinate amounts of sleep, etc.?

     16)   Do you seem to be frequently involved in damaging relationships?  Is it hard for you to cut off a negative relationship?  Are  you so loyal that you partake in the sins of another without even thinking of disassociating yourself with that person? Do you have a need to be in control of others?  Or,  can others easily control you?

    Do you avoid close relationships due to so much hurt from past relationships?

     17)  Do you have a criminal record? Were you guilty? Of what? Have you spent time in jail or prison? If you had gotten caught for something in the past, would you have gone to jail for that thing you did?

     

    18)  Do you have a history of mental illness? Have you spent time in intensive therapy or in a facility for mental illness?  What was the diagnosis?   Do you get into frequent relationship issues because you often perceive others’ words and expressions as being hurtful ?  Are you paranoid?    Do you have an exaggerated view of yourself that you protect at all times?     Do you find yourself “covering up” all negative issues in yourself and in your home in order to maintain a “front” ? Do you feel tiny underneath the “armor” of lies you have constructed to make sure others see you and/or your family  in a positive light?    Do you habitually lie rather than face truth?   Most important:  Do you bring TRUTH in your life to LIGHT or would you rather believe and live lies?   Do you deliberately allow yourself to live in a fantasy world OR has someone told you that you are totally out of touch with reality?   Are you deeply bothered when you have obviously hurt someone else?   Do you experience other mental and/or serious emotional  issues?

     19)   Do you have any eating disorders, e.g.,  sometimes refusing to eat or eating too much and vomiting it out?

     Are you a glutton?  Does your weight keep you in such poor health that it is hard to perform the things for which  you are responsible ?   Are your eating habits so poor in quality that some of whatever problems you have could possibly be a direct result of too much junk food and too little nourishment?

     20)  What is your average time per night that you sleep?  Are you frequently troubled with sleeplessness?  Do you sleep too much and too often?

     21) How much time do you spend a week (on the average) watching TV? What programs do you habitually watch? Is there any program you are bound to?

     22) Are you having credit card spending habit trouble? Are you frequently troubled with overdue notices?

          Do you get "drunk" with spending? Do you ever find yourself trying to buy relationships with others? Do you often find yourself used by others taking advantage of your money or possessions but you don’t dare say , “No”?

    23) Think over the people you spend time with socially (including  on the internet). Are they Christians? Is anyone not a Christian? Does anyone drag you down spiritually?

    Think of the conversational content with your various friends: Is there anyone who is obviously an influence upon you to be critical, negative, carnal, etc?

    What kind of people are you attracted to and who seems drawn to you? What does that say to you about who you are?   Are their sites and/or blogs that you are drawn to on the internet that are not edifying to your spiritual life?

    Do you just have to “keep up with” all the latest “star” related gossip? Do these people seem as if they are “real” in your own personal “world”?

    Are you involved in  any relationship in any way, anywhere that you know is not what the Lord wants for you?

     

     Whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:31     

     24) Is there a sin you have committed or are committing that you cannot seem to repent of?

     25) Do you suffer from a feeling of rejection frequently?

     26) What religions or denominations have you actively participated in?  Whose religious literature do you now get and read regularly? What religious TV, radio programs, and/or internet materials  do you listen to or read regularly?  What church or churches do you frequently visit (other than your local church)?  What parachurch organizations are you either a member of or do you attend regularly?  Name several Christian books you have read within the last few months? What minister(s)’ recorded messages to you regular listen to?     Do you have a deep , loving loyalty to be faithful to attend and to “build up” your local church? Or,  do you find yourself being overly critical of your local church and/or are happy to miss services for whatever excuse you can find without challenging that “excuse” as to it’s validity?    What ministry are you personally conducting regularly above and beyond your local church involvement or what ministry are you actively working with apart from your local church?

     27)  Would you say that your parents loved you and wanted to do the very best they would to provide for your physical and emotional needs? Were they Christians?    Were you basically normal as a child or did you manifest special needs or problems beyond the ordinary?  

    Are there any negative messages in your head from your parents? E.g.: "You will never amount to anything";"You had better do your best to look good because you are stupid"; "you will end up in jail," etc.  Or, were their expectations SO high for you    that you “dropped out” of trying  to “live up” to their expectations rather than be saddled with their dreams for your life?

     28)   List and explain concerning any other areas you feel are pertinent in considering your being completely healed which were not covered above.

  • Salvation/Damnation plus eternal results

    The choice: Salvation or Damnation: We make that choice and then either experience eternal life or damnation

    Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.  KJV

    What happens to the mind and lives of those who reject the gospel:

    Rom 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."   18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator — who is forever praised. Amen. 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

     

    28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.     But God has the power to cause us to walk in newness of life if we are reconciled through Christ to Him:

    2 Cor 5:14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.   ‘’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new 18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled (2644) us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. 20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

    Reconciled:NT:2644 katallasso (kat-al-las'-so); from NT:2596 and NT:236; to change mutually, i.e. (figuratively) to compound a difference:

    2 Cor 5: 21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.KJV

    Rejecting the gospel results in severe punishment:

    Matt 10:11 "Whatever town or village you enter, search for some worthy person there and stay at his house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting. 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. 15 I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

    We are to  accept the message and to walk accordingly:

    Acts 2:40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

    People who reject God’s salvation He offers through Christ remain children of the devil:

    John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."  13 The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid."

    ………… 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me."  19 Then they asked him, "Where is your father?"

    "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also."  .......21 Once more Jesus said to them, "I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come."  22 This made the Jews ask, "Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, 'Where I go, you cannot come'?" 23 But he continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am [the one I claim to be], you will indeed die in your sins." 

    25 "Who are you?" they asked. "Just what I have been claiming all along," Jesus replied. 26 "I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is reliable, and what I have heard from him I tell the world."  27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am [the one I claim to be] and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him."  30 Even as he spoke, many put their faith in him. 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."  33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" 34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are ready to kill me, because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you do what you have heard from your father."  39 "Abraham is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham's children," said Jesus, "then you would do the things Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the things your own father does." "We are not illegitimate children," they protested. "The only Father we have is God himself." 42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me? 47 He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God." 

    48 The Jews answered him, "Aren't we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?"

    49 "I am not possessed by a demon," said Jesus, "but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death." 

    There can come a time after the Lord has presented the Word to you through His messengers, that He will tell them, “That is enough….go tell others now…”

    Acts 13:38 "Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. 39 Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses. …….44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and talked abusively against what Paul was saying. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: "We had to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.

    At the end, at His coming: The fate of the believer and unbeliever:

    2 Thess 1:3 We ought always to thank God for you, brothers, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing. 4 Therefore, among God's churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.

    5 All this is evidence that God's judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. 6 God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you 7 and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. 8 He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power 10 on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you.

    2 Thess 2:1 Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers, 2 not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by some prophecy, report or letter supposed to have come from us, saying that the day of the Lord has already come. 3 Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. 4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God.

    5 Don't you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? 6 And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. 7 For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, 10 and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing.     Rev 20:1 And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. 2 He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. 3 He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time. 4 I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5(The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years. 7 When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth — Gog and Magog — to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. 9 They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God's people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them. 10 And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever. 11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15 If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

     

    Revelation 21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."

    5 He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true." 6 He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7 He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son. 8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars — their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death." 22 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. 25 On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. 26 The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. 27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.

    Revelation 22:3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. 6 The angel said to me, "These words are trustworthy and true. The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his angel to show his servants the things that must soon take place." 7 "Behold, I am coming soon! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy in this book."  …………12 "Behold, I am coming soon! I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star."  17 The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life. 18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. 19 And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book. 20 He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

     

  • What I believe the Lord is saying to His church all over and to our local church too

    know your works and know that you take very seriously and are faithfully doing and striving for even more excellence regarding:

    Gathering together faithfully and speaking into one another’s lives:

    Heb 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

    Willingly, lovingly, and joyfully entering into praise and worship times:

    Ps 100:4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise : be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

    Avoiding critical, negative confessions about our church  Also, truly seeking to be lights in this world (by pursuing holiness -- living in a higher realm than the unbelievers do).:  Phil 2:14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings:15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;

    Sincerely wanting to be at peace with one another and , therefore , avoiding harsh confrontations birthed from impatience and disgust.    Eph 4:2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.KJV

    Cheerful, consistent, generous giving is practiced by the ROL members.  Mal 3:10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.

    Many members come to church both prepared to share in open pulpit time and also freely add to sermons when appropriate in order to strengthen the church.

    1 Cor 14:26 What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn , or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church.

    ROL have responded to the increased call to prayer and is pressing into making prayer more and more of a priority that all participate in.

    Luke 19:46 A   "It is written," he said to them, "'My house will be a house of prayer

    I ask you to consider the following areas in which I am calling you to become more faithful:

    Sober up and realize the weighty important of receiving and walking in the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Remember the purpose He is given to you is to give you the power to be my witnesses. WITNESS every way you can, every day.

    Acts 1: 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." 

    Be CAREFUL how you fill up your days!  Be watchful concerning joining too many things leaving little or no time for being My soldier! That includes having large amounts of  time to worship Me, to  talk to Me, to  read My Word, and to receive daily “marching orders”.   2 Tim 2:4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

  • Jonah: Both sermon and corresponding thoughts/articles

    JONAH:

    Jonah was written around 862  BC     This was well before the Assyrians overtook and captured the Northern kingdom of Israel. Around 726 BC the Assyrians, in 2 Kings 18: 9—11, took the Northern kingdom of Israel, 10 tribes, into Assyria as captives, i.e., this happened AFTER Jonah at around the time the final judgment on Nineveh , in Nahum, was written.   So it was around 149 years between Nineveh repenting and Nineveh being once more the object of the Lord’s wrath.

    Did no one remember? This would be like God greatly helping Americans  because of great  repentance and turning to the Lord in 1860. (E.g., Fulton Street Revival 1857-1860)  And now  in 2009, we are completely backslidden again and no one remembers and responds to the lessons  of the 1860 event.   What God provided then gave them strength THROUGH great turmoil.  He can do the same NOW.  

    Has anyone heard of this American Revival in 1857 – 1860 (an article explaining follows this).  ? I had not. Or, if I had, I had forgotten now.  Does anyone point to that day 150 years ago to teach and warn us for the present time? I am not hearing them do it. Then, perhaps we can’t point a finger at Nineveh saying “What is wrong with you people? You had Jonah warn you and then God delivered you from judgment. Don’t you remember that??  “ And, just like we who don’t learn from history, probably not.

    Sometimes it is during the days of  hopelessness and despair that revival comes to a people! So it was in the middle of the nineteenth century. In the United States, it was a spiritual, political, and economic low point. Many people had become disillusioned with spiritual things because of preachers who had repeatedly and falsely predicted the end of the world in the 1840's.  
    Agitation over the slavery issue had bred much political unrest, and civil war seemed imminent. A financial panic hit in 1857. Banks failed, railroads were bankrupt, factories closed, unemployment increased. Many Christians realized the need for prayer in such dire situations, and prayer-meetings began to spread around the country.  
    In the lower Manhattan section of New York, a Dutch Reformed church had been steadily losing members; they hired missionary Jeremiah Lamphier to reverse the trend with an active visitation program. However, he had little success in awakening church members by his visits, so in September, 1857, he rented a hall on Fulton street in New York City and advertised its availability for prayer meetings. Six men assembled for that first prayer meeting 
    on September 23. Two days later the Bank of Philadelphia failed. 
    In October the men began praying together daily; on October 10 the stock market crashed. The financial panic triggered a religious awakening, and people flocked to the prayer meetings. Within sixmonths 10,000 people were gathering daily for prayer in New York City alone.
    The movement explodes: Other cities also were experiencing a renewed interest in prayer. In Chicago, the Metropolitan Theater was filled every day with 2000 people assembling for prayer. In Louisville, several thousand came to the Masonic Temple for prayer each morning. Two thousand assembled for daily prayer in Cleveland,  and the 
    St. Louis churches were filled for months at a time. The newly  formed YMCA also played an important role in holding prayer meetings and spreading the revival throughout the country. 
    When media actually helped :  In February 1858, Gordon Bennett of the New York Herald gave extensive coverage to the prayer meeting revival. Not to be outdone, the New York Tribune devoted an entire issue in April, 1858 to news of the revival. News of the revival quickly traveled westward 
    by telegraph. This was the first revival in  which the media played an important role in spreading the revival. 
    Prayer everywhere :  The prayer meetings were organized in the cities by lay people and were interdenominational.  
    Unlike earlier awakenings, prayer rather than preaching was the main  instrument of revival. Tents were often set up as places where people  could gather for prayer, introducing a custom followed by later revivalists. The meetings themselves were very informal -- any person might pray, exhort, lead in a song, or give a word of testimony, with a five minute limit placed on each speaker. In spite of the less structured nature of the prayer meetings, they lacked the extreme emotionalism which some had criticized in earlier revivals.
    This was the first revival beginning in America with a worldwide impact. From the United States the revival spread to Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, Europe, South Africa, India, Australia,and the Pacific islands. In geographical and proportionate numerical extent, the revival of 1857-1860 has not been equaled. 
    Even ships coming into British ports told of the revival in America.  
    Ireland soon began to experience a prayer meeting revival as well, with crowds becoming so large they had to meet in the open air. When John Cairns preached in Belfast in May, 1859, he had never before seen such eagerness to hear the gospel or lives which had been so transformed by the revival. He said: "Nature does not contain any epidemic so like to Christian conversion." 
    When Andrew Bonar heard of the work in Ireland, he increased hisprayer for a revival in Scotland. In his diary of July 3, 1859, he wrote, "Again this night in sorrow of heart over the terrible carelessness, indifference, deadness of this 'valley of dry bones.' O my God, come over to Scotland  and help us!"  Within two months Andrew Bonar found himself in the midst of revival in  Scotland. On September 10th he wrote in his diary, "This has been a remarkable week: every day I have heard of some soul saved among us..."  All classes became interested in salvation, backsliders returned, conversions increased, and Christians desired a deeper instruction in spiritual truths. Families established daily devotions, and entire communities underwenta noticeable change in morals. Not celebrities but ordinary people praying. Similar changes were noted as the revival spread to Wales, England, and beyond.
    There was an absence of great names connected with the revival; lay people in prayer were the prime instruments used by God in  awakening the people. The preaching, which in many areas had become too intellectual and lifeless, now concentrated on the truths of the gospel of Christ and His cross. The results of the revival of 1859 in the areas of evangelism, missions, and social action continued for decades. 
    Many who became Christian leaders during the second half of the nineteenth century were greatly affected by the revival-- such as D.L. Moody, William Booth, C.H.  Spurgeon, and A.B. Simpson. As James Buchanan of Scotland summarized, it  was a time when "new spiritual life was imparted to the dead, and new spiritual health imparted to the living."    
    Getting a people spiritually ready to face tragedy?
    The revival of 1859 had similar effects in the  North and the South, and may have prepared many Americans  spiritually to survive the horrors of the war that broke out a few years later. The awakening continued into the Civil War period, a great revival occurring in the Southern armies in 1863-64.

    Ninevah’s origins:  Gen 10:8 Cush was the father of Nimrod, who grew to be a mighty warrior on the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; that is why it is said, "Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD." 10 The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon, Erech, Akkad and Calneh, in Shinar.   11 From that land he went to Assyria , where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah 12 and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city.     Nineveh ( Church of God material from internet)    ng the 1991 Gulf War against Saddam Hussein's Iraq, many ancient cities were shown on news maps. Among them was Nineveh. Nineveh was located on the eastern bank of the Tigris River in northeastern Mesopotamia (Iraq). It flourished from about 800 to 610 B.C. as the capital of the Assyrian empire (see Ancient Empires - Assyria –{rb: This is the people who had already conquered the northern kingdom of Israel – it was} mentioned in the Bible back in Genesis as being founded by Nimrod (Genesis 10:9-12).

    During its time of power, the Assyrian empire conquered the northern Israelite kingdom of Israel, with their capital at Samaria, and transported them away into captivity. Unlike the southern Israelite kingdom of Judah, with their capital at Jerusalem Fact File, they never returned, and became known as the "Lost Ten Tribes" of Israel. The Assyrians themselves eventually were lost, although some identify their descendants as being in central Europe today. ...............................Eventually, the Assyrian empire declined and fell. It was overtaken by the Persian (see Ancient Empires - Persia) and Babylonian (see King Nebuchadnezzar) empires who were themselves just then on the rise. Today, Nineveh is just a vast stretch of ancient ruins.        End of  article

    Nahum, who prophesied 149 after Jonah, predicted Ninevah’s downfall.

    It was a city of great wealth and trade:

    1 Kings 10:22 For the king had at sea a navy of Tharshish with the navy of Hiram: once in three years came the navy of Tharshish, bringing gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks.

    Tarshish was targeted by God for destruction for her pride

    Isaiah 23:9 The LORD of hosts hath purposed it, to stain the pride of all glory, and to bring into contempt all the honourable of the earth.10 Pass through thy land as a river, O daughter of Tarshish: there is no more strength.11 He stretched out his hand over the sea, he shook the kingdoms: the LORD hath given a commandment against the merchant city, to destroy the strong holds thereof.….14 Howl, ye ships of Tarshish: for your strength is laid waste.

     

    Jer 10:9 Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.

    10 But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.

    11 Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.

    When someone is given a job by the Lord to do, it does not always cause them to feel  enthused , thrilled , and special!  Other Reluctant and/or unhappy  ministers:

    Ex 4:13 But Moses said, "O Lord, please send someone else to do it."

     

    1 Kings 19:1 Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, "May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them." 3 Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day's journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. "I have had enough, LORD," he said. "Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors." 5 Then he lay down under the tree and fell asleep.

    Jeremiah:

    Jer 20: 7 O LORD, you deceived me, and I was deceived;you overpowered me and prevailed.I am ridiculed all day long;everyone mocks me. 8 Whenever I speak, I cry out proclaiming violence and destruction.So the word of the LORD has brought me insult and reproach all day long. 9 But if I say, "I will not mention him or speak any more in his name,"his word is in my heart like a fire,a fire shut up in my bones.I am weary of holding it in;indeed, I cannot. 10 I hear many whispering,"Terror on every side!Report him! Let's report him!"All my friends are waiting for me to slip, saying,"Perhaps he will be deceived;then we will prevail over him and take our revenge on him."

    11 But the LORD is with me like a mighty warrior;so my persecutors will stumble and not prevail.They will fail and be thoroughly disgraced;their dishonor will never be forgotten. 12 O LORD Almighty, you who examine the righteous and probe the heart and mind,let me see your vengeance upon them,for to you I have committed my cause.

    13 Sing to the LORD!Give praise to the LORD!He rescues the life of the needy from the hands of the wicked.

    14 Cursed be the day I was born!May the day my mother bore me not be blessed! 15 Cursed be the man who brought my father the news,who made him very glad, saying,"A child is born to you — a son!" 16 May that man be like the towns the LORD overthrew without pity.May he hear wailing in the morning,a battle cry at noon. 17 For he did not kill me in the womb,with my mother as my grave,her womb enlarged forever. 18 Why did I ever come out of the womb to see trouble and sorrow and to end my days in shame?

     

    Ezekiel:

    Ezek 3:12 Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard behind me a loud rumbling sound — May the glory of the LORD be praised in his dwelling place!— 13 the sound of the wings of the living creatures brushing against each other and the sound of the wheels beside them, a loud rumbling sound. 14 The Spirit then lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness and in the anger of my spirit, with the strong hand of the LORD upon me. 15 I came to the exiles who lived at Tel Abib near the Kebar River. And there, where they were living, I sat among them for seven days — overwhelmed.

     

    The sailors were not believers in Jehovah:

    Jonah 1:4 Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. 5 All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.

    But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. 6 The captain went to him and said, "How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us, and we will not perish."

    But when they cast lots, it was Jehovah who responded – sometimes when folks are calling out in sincere desperation, our God intervenes J :

    7 Then the sailors said to each other, "Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity." They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.

    8 So they asked him, "Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?"

    Jonah rightly depicts who he is and who God is to these men:

    9 He answered, "I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land."

    10 This terrified them and they asked, "What have you done?" (They knew he was running away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.)

    11 The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, "What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?"

    Jonah cares enough about these guys to sacrifice his life for them. But we see that the guys care about Jonah too….they do not respond to his explanation and plan of action right away

    12 "Pick me up and throw me into the sea," he replied, "and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you."

    13 Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.

    THE MEN REALIZE THAT THE GOD OF JONAH IS SOMEONE TO FEAR:  DON’T ASSUME THAT THE LORD WILL NOT USE  YOU TO MAKE HIM KNOWN TO SOME OF THE HARDEST “CASES”

    14 Then they cried to the LORD, "O LORD, please do not let us die for taking this man's life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, O LORD, have done as you pleased." 15 Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm. 16 At this the men greatly feared the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him.

     

    Jonah knew God and His ways – why had he not evangelized these guys in the first place? He knew that any could become a part of the people of God.  Did he, like us, assume people outside of our own circles are not interested in our God?

    God is able to provide a tight place for us as we  “think over” what sin got us  into that hot spot .

    Jonah 2:1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God. 2 He said:

    "In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From the depths of the grave I called for help, and you listened to my cry.

     

    Today we call upon the Lord Jesus Christ when our sins have led us to the place from which we need deliverance

    Rom 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!KJV

     

    Jonah 2:3 You hurled me into the deep, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me. 4 I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.' 5 The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. 6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you brought my life up from the pit, O LORD my God. 7 "When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.

     

    Some who are proud may say that I never called upon Him before – it is wrong to call upon Him now that I am in trouble – I have always despised death bed conversions

     

    Jonah has a response to these proud thinkers who always think “I have made my bed, now I will lie in it and not whine about it”:

     

    Jonah 2: 8 "Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs.  Or   Jonah 2:8 They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.KJV

     

    The idol of the self made, self reliant person is SELF; however, some could cleave to false gods for deliverance (not wanting to admit they spent their lives on the wrong side)!

     

    Jonah 2:9 But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. Salvation comes from the LORD." 10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

     

    Deliverance came after he repented and called upon the Lord; he also praised God and he promised to keep all his vows.

     

    Jonah 3:1 Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: 2 "Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you."

     

     

    God as our Father, our parent, does not say to Himself: “Jonah really does not want to go to Ninevah and I surely don’t want to put him through all he faced before and risk his backsliding beyond redemption so now I will ask another person”.  God is a persistent parent.  He expects us to obey the first time. He loves us enough to give us a second chance .  God also is the Boss – he is not into asking us permission or for approval on His plans for our life’s work and ministry. 

    He is not a democratic dad. He does not look for popularity with His children. We follow Him, He does not follow us.

    Jonah 3: 3 Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very important city — a visit required three days. 4 On the first day, Jonah started into the city. He proclaimed: "Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned." 5 The Ninevites believed God. They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.

    Nineveh was the capitol of Assyria. The Assyrians later overtook the Northern Kingdom of Israel and carried her out of Israel. Around that same time the prophet, Nahum , about 149 years after Jonah, prophesied complete destruction to Nineveh. That time they did not repent as they did when Jonah preached to them.

     

    Jonah 3: 6     When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust.

    The king declares a fast , prayers, and repentance for all:

    Jonah 37 Then he issued a proclamation in Nineveh: "By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let any man or beast, herd or flock, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. 8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence.

     

    The king did not presumptuously assume that their fasting and their giving up evil would insure them safety from destruction. He put them all at God’s mercy. Today we hear some “commanding God” or stating in “positive confession” form what God MUST do. Baloney. God is sovereign . He does not “obey” man.  He is free to choose mercy over judgment ; however, it is His choice. Yes, He can be moved by man’s actions; however, anyone who thinks he is manipulating God is sadly mistaken!!

    Jonah 3: 9 Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish."

     

    God did heed their fasting, prayers , and repenting. He changed His mind from the Word he had given Jonah to preach:

    Jonah 3: 10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction he had threatened.

     

    Jonah was a MIXTURE of being a man of God and being into his own selfish ways:   On the one hand, he was a prophet of the Lord; he did—reluctantly—testify as to who he was (to the sailors) as well as eventually do what the Lord ordered him to do—he was not an “outstanding saint” to emulate in all ways!

     

    Jonah 4:1 But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry. 2 He prayed to the LORD, "O LORD, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. 3 Now, O LORD, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live." 4 But the LORD replied, "Have you any right to be angry?"

     

     

    Jonah’s heart was NOT full of compassion!!! He disagreed with the Lord’s response and even became angry with Him!! How do we respond when a person we are  disgusted with gets mercy instead of judgment? Maybe we even took the attitude that if we don’t take vengeance and we give that person to God, God will surely reward us with a ringside seat to watch their severe punishment. That is a bad, selfish attitude!!! God help us all!

    Jonah WANTED the Ninevites to be destroyed. But God commands us against delighting in the destruction of our enemies:

    Prov 24:17 Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth:18 Lest the LORD see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.KJV

     

    We are to do good to all:

    1 Thess 5: 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.  NIV

     

    We are to GIVE to our enemies:

    Rom 12: 19 Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:

    "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head."   21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. NIV

     

     God teaches Jonah a lesson through first giving and then destroying the vine that sheltered Jonah from the sun:

    Jonah 4:5 Jonah went out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. 6 Then the LORD God provided a vine and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the vine. 7 But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the vine so that it withered. 8 When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah's head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, "It would be better for me to die than to live." 9 But God said to Jonah, "Do you have a right to be angry about the vine?" "I do," he said. "I am angry enough to die."

    God rebuked Jonah for his self centeredness and showed him that it is better to be concerned about multitudes of ignorant people !!

    Jonah 4:10 But the LORD said, "You have been concerned about this vine, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11 But Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well. Should I not be concerned about that great city?"

     

    God was doing some “values clarification” here – he was pointing out to Jonah that his priorities were not in order!  Things are NOT as important as PEOPLE!!!

    What gets our attention off our being called to be witnesses and soldiers for the kingdom of the Lord? What do WE think we are SO entitled to that we get ANGRY if it is destroyed, taken away from us? 

    How do we respond to our gifts and callings given to us by God in comparison to how we respond to what gives us earthly pleasure?  Who are our gods? Mammon? Comfort? Acceptance? Entertainment and amusement?  Self protection?

     

    A time of counsel and deliverance is coming up soon – do you need help in overcoming the world, the flesh , and the devil so that you don’t end up in the belly of a fish (i.e., whatever tight spot the Lord is preparing for you to get your attention).

     

    YOU ARE BORN. YOUR ARE ALIVE.  You WILL suffer from time to time!  In this world ALL have tribulation. We cannot escape hardship. But we can live IN the one who has overcome the world.  Then we can handle anything. Without Him there is nothing by hopelessness and despair . In Him is victory and joy.

    John 16:3333 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation : but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

    2 Tim 2: 3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

    4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier .

    Phil 4:12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.KJV

  • Purim: Faithful no matter the cost

    Purim sermon, 3 11 09

    REMAIN TRUE TO YOUR DESTINY IN THE LORD REGARDLESS OF IF YOUR FAITHFULNESS BRINGS COMFORT OR HARDSHIP.

     

    Civil disobedience:

    Acts 5:27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them,28 Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us.29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.KJV

    Vashti did the first act of civil disobedience – hopefully it was because her own modesty prevented her from parading herself before a crowd of drunken men:

    Est 1:7 And they gave them drink in vessels of gold, (the vessels being diverse one from another,) and royal wine in abundance, according to the state of the king.8 And the drinking was according to the law; none did compel: for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house, that they should do according to every man's pleasure.9 Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to king Ahasuerus.10 On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven chamberlains that served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,11 To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look on.12 But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king's commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.KJV

     The next case of civil disobedience recorded in the book of Esther is that of Mordecai. (3:2)

    The risk Esther took in coming before the king without being called to him first could have resulted in death; however, she suffered that risk for the sake of God’s people.

     

    If we must ever make that choice between God’s ways and man’s demands, we hope we are found faithful like Peter,  Daniel, Mordecai, and Esther. However, there is no guarantee we won’t end up like John the Baptist when we obey God rather than give man what he wants! The principle is to obey God whether we prosper or perish as a result!

     

    Mordecai and Esther both remained true to the people of God throughout their time in and near the court of the king. God richly rewarded them. The Jews too were a people who kept themselves separate from the ways of the king and his people. (see 3:8)

    Est 3: 2 And all the king's servants, that were in the king's gate, bowed, and reverenced Haman: for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence.3 Then the king's servants, which were in the king's gate, said unto Mordecai, Why transgressest thou the king's commandment?

    4 Now it came to pass, when they spake daily unto him, and he hearkened not unto them, that they told Haman, to see whether Mordecai's matters would stand: for he had told them that he was a Jew.

    5 And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence, then was Haman full of wrath.

    6 And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had shewed him the people of Mordecai: wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.

    …………………….8 And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus, There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the provinces of thy kingdom; and their laws are diverse from all people; neither keep they the king's laws: therefore it is not for the king's profit to suffer them.

    9 If it please the king, let it be written that they may be destroyed: and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the business, to bring it into the king's treasuries.

    10 And the king took his ring from his hand, and gave it unto Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews' enemy.

    11 And the king said unto Haman, The silver is given to thee, the people also, to do with them as it seemeth good to thee.

     

    4:1 When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry;2 And came even before the king's gate: for none might enter into the king's gate clothed with sackcloth.3 And in every province, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

    Before Esther knew WHY, her first response was to want Mordecai to be comfortable:

    4 So Esther's maids and her chamberlains came and told it her. Then was the queen exceedingly grieved; and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take away his sackcloth from him: but he received it not.

    5 Then called Esther for Hatach, one of the king's chamberlains, whom he had appointed to attend upon her, and gave him a commandment to Mordecai, to know what it was, and why it was.6 So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city, which was before the king's gate.

    7 And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him, and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king's treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.

    Mordecai at this point did not care if Esther got “comfortable” – he asked her to do something life threatening on behalf of the Jews!

    8 Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them, to shew it unto Esther, and to declare it unto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make supplication unto him, and to make request before him for her people.  9 And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.   

    Mordecai: I could die for that!!!!

    10 Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai;   11 All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.

     

    Est 4:12 And they told to Mordecai Esther's words. 13 Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king's house, more than all the Jews.

    14 For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

    15 Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer,

    Esther calls for a fast:

     

    16 Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.

    17 So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.

     

    Mordecai supernaturally receives favor

    Est 6:1 On that night could not the king sleep, and he commanded to bring the book of records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king.

    2 And it was found written, that Mordecai had told of Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's chamberlains, the keepers of the door, who sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus.3 And the king said, What honour and dignity hath been done to Mordecai for this? Then said the king's servants that ministered unto him, There is nothing done for him.

    So the king asks Haman what should be done for a man he wishes to honor. Haman, imagining it was he himself the king wanted to honor, told the king all the things he himself would want. Then it is Mordecai Haman must honor in this way.

    Est 6:11 Then took Haman the apparel and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and brought him on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaimed before him, Thus shall it be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour.12 And Mordecai came again to the king's gate. But Haman hasted to his house mourning, and having his head covered.

    13 And Haman told Zeresh his wife and all his friends every thing that had befallen him. Then said his wise men and Zeresh his wife unto him, If Mordecai be of the seed of the Jews, before whom thou hast begun to fall, thou shalt not prevail against him, but shalt surely fall before him.14 And while they were yet talking with him, came the king's chamberlains, and hasted to bring Haman unto the banquet that Esther had prepared

    Est 7:1 So the king and Haman came to banquet with Esther the queen.2 And the king said again unto Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine, What is thy petition, queen Esther? and it shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? and it shall be performed, even to the half of the kingdom.3 Then Esther the queen answered and said, If I have found favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request:4 For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I had held my tongue, although the enemy could not countervail the king's damage.5 Then the king Ahasuerus answered and said unto Esther the queen, Who is he, and where is he, that durst presume in his heart to do so?

    6 And Esther said, The adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman. Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen.7 And the king arising from the banquet of wine in his wrath went into the palace garden: and Haman stood up to make request for his life to Esther the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined against him by the king.8 Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman was fallen upon the bed whereon Esther was. Then said the king, Will he force the queen also before me in the house? As the word went out of the king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.9 And Harbonah, one of the chamberlains, said before the king, Behold also, the gallows fifty cubits high, which Haman had made for Mordecai, who had spoken good for the king, standeth in the house of Haman. Then the king said, Hang him thereon.10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.

     

    Est 8:1 On that day did the king Ahasuerus give the house of Haman the Jews' enemy unto Esther the queen. And Mordecai came before the king; for Esther had told what he was unto her.2 And the king took off his ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it unto Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.

    3 And Esther spake yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and besought him with tears to put away the mischief of Haman the Agagite, and his device that he had devised against the Jews.

    4 Then the king held out the golden sceptre toward Esther. So Esther arose, and stood before the king,

    5 And said, If it please the king, and if I have found favour in his sight, and the thing seem right before the king, and I be pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews which are in all the king's provinces:

    6 For how can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people? or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred?

    7 Then the king Ahasuerus said unto Esther the queen and to Mordecai the Jew, Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and him they have hanged upon the gallows, because he laid his hand upon the Jews.

    8 Write ye also for the Jews, as it liketh you, in the king's name, and seal it with the king's ring: for the writing which is written in the king's name, and sealed with the king's ring, may no man reverse.

    9 Then were the king's scribes called at that time in the third month, that is, the month Sivan, on the three and twentieth day thereof; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded unto the Jews, and to the lieutenants, and the deputies and rulers of the provinces which are from India unto Ethiopia, an hundred twenty and seven provinces, unto every province according to the writing thereof, and unto every people after their language, and to the Jews according to their writing, and according to their language.

    10 And he wrote in the king Ahasuerus' name, and sealed it with the king's ring, and sent letters by posts on horseback, and riders on mules, camels, and young dromedaries:

     

    There would still be warfare; however, the Jews were allowed to fight for their lives.

    11 Wherein the king granted the Jews which were in every city to gather themselves together, and to stand for their life, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish, all the power of the people and province that would assault them, both little ones and women, and to take the spoil of them for a prey,

    12 Upon one day in all the provinces of king Ahasuerus, namely, upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar.

    13 The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people, and that the Jews should be ready against that day to avenge themselves on their enemies.

    14 So the posts that rode upon mules and camels went out, being hastened and pressed on by the king's commandment. And the decree was given at Shushan the palace.

    15 And Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white, and with a great crown of gold, and with a garment of fine linen and purple: and the city of Shushan rejoiced and was glad.

    16 The Jews had light, and gladness, and joy, and honour.

    17 And in every province, and in every city, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, the Jews had joy and gladness, a feast and a good day. And many of the people of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews fell upon them.

    Even non Jews helped the Jews destroy their enemies!!

    Esther 9:1 Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king's commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them, (though it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that hated them;)

    2 The Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, to lay hand on such as sought their hurt: and no man could withstand them; for the fear of them fell upon all people.

    3 And all the rulers of the provinces, and the lieutenants, and the deputies, and officers of the king, helped the Jews; because the fear of Mordecai fell upon them.

    4 For Mordecai was great in the king's house, and his fame went out throughout all the provinces: for this man Mordecai waxed greater and greater.

    5 Thus the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and slaughter, and destruction, and did what they would unto those that hated them.

    …………………..11 On that day the number of those that were slain in Shushan the palace was brought before the king.

    12 And the king said unto Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of Haman; what have they done in the rest of the king's provinces? now what is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: or what is thy request further? and it shall be done.

    13 Then said Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews which are in Shushan to do tomorrow also according unto this day's decree, and let Haman's ten sons be hanged upon the gallows.

    14 And the king commanded it so to be done: and the decree was given at Shushan; and they hanged Haman's ten sons.

    The first PURIM

    ….17 On the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of the same rested they, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.18 But the Jews that were at Shushan assembled together on the thirteenth day thereof; and on the fourteenth thereof; and on the fifteenth day of the same they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.19 Therefore the Jews of the villages, that dwelt in the unwalled towns, made the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, and a good day, and of sending portions one to another. {Gift giving often seems to be a part of celebrations that people have .}

     

    Purim is established as an annual holiday among the Jews

    20 And Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters unto all the Jews that were in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, both nigh and far,21 To stablish this among them, that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and the fifteenth day of the same, yearly,

    22 As the days wherein the Jews rested from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to joy, and from mourning into a good day: that they should make them days of feasting and joy, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor…..26 Wherefore they called these days Purim after the name of Pur. Therefore for all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and which had come unto them,

    27 The Jews ordained, and took upon them, and upon their seed, and upon all such as joined themselves unto them, so as it should not fail, that they would keep these two days according to their writing, and according to their appointed time every year;28 And that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor the memorial of them perish from their seed.

    Esther 1010:……3 For Mordecai the Jew was next unto king Ahasuerus, and great among the Jews, and accepted of the multitude of his brethren, seeking the wealth of his people, and speaking peace to all his seed.

    SUMMARY: 

    For Mordecai and for Esther, the end result of both civil disobedience and obeying God was gold, glory , and power.   Moreover, the desire of their hearts, the destruction of the Jews  initiated by Haman was thwarted; the Jews instead destroyed Haman, his sons, and all who were their enemies.

    .But, they, like us, still one day died;  all that remains for them  is the honor before God of having given their lives in faithfulness  to Him no matter what the cost!

    Pleasing God should be our main motivation for anything we risk for Him:  Whether we gain something in this earth for our faithfulness or it is only in eternity that we gain, the choice still remains the same:

    When God’s ways and man’s ways clash: ACT ON THE SIDE OF GOD!!

    Fasting: Instances in the Word and what we can learn from each one about fasting (edited 3 18 09)

    Introduction:  Reasons to fast, what accompanies fasting, and the results of fasting

    Fasting is initiated for various reasons:

    For a nation, a country – some group or ministry or church the Lord has laid upon your (or all of our) heart(s)

    A desire to have intense love and desire for the Lord and His kingdom, i.e., to “unthaw” – to have Him replace our stony hearts with hears of flesh!!

    An intense desire to get climb up into a higher  level with the Lord and in ministering His will

    A desperate situation that only God can deal with

    Repentance and a desire for a fresh beginning

    For someone else regarding the above three or our desire to have the Lord draw them into the first 3 reasons

    Sometimes the Holy Spirit nudges us to fast and we don’t find out until later why He did that!

    Fasting is often  accompanied with

    A declaration among God’s people ( a nation, a region, a local church…)  that we are all now going to fast – that includes old and young, male and female – in the case of Ninevah, it included animals!

    Sacred, solemn assemblies

    Repentance, mourning, and tears  for ourselves and for others too

    Brokenness -- acknowledgment of sin for self and others and the fact that  our worthiness is not what gives us the right to anything – it is just the mercy and love of the Lord that gives us anything

    Prayer – including unusual, travailing prayer

    LOUD crying out to the Lord

    Worship and praise.

    Long periods (hours, not just a few minutes) of  Scripture reading (and/or listening), studying, reflection – learning to TREASURE God’s Word with adoring love and respect towards the Author! Rehearsing the things He did in the Word with awe and admiration.

    Meditating on and rehearsing to God the many times He has been and is faithful (thus eliminating any wrongful thinking towards the Lord in the present time)

    Reminding God of His promises in the Word and of any prophetic word we may have received that applies to the current situation

    Pleading for mercy rather than judgment

    Increased sensitivity to applying the Word 24/7

    Revelation knowledge.

    Mouths that harmonize with God’s Word and Spirit

    Guidance from the Lord for decisions and actions

    Our hearts softened; God’s heart towards us changed

    Discontinuation of  some normal activities, e.g., “dressing up”{in some cases, deliberately “dressing down”, i.e., putting on sackcloth and ashes!},  marital relations, work, or anything that seems “earthly and distracting from the urgency of the fast and its purposes

    *Re: “Dressing down” : Other times Jesus said to deliberately look the way you always do in the marketplace so as to fast in secret.   We find both public  and private fasts mentioned in the Word – just as we find both public and private prayers there.

    Note:   What accompanies fasting and the results of fasting:  The above list of what accompanies fasting overlaps with the results of fasting.

    Fasting often  results in some or all of the following:

    Revelation knowledge

    Wisdom for decisions and direction

    God granting grace and peace in and/or  for something  that caused us to feel overwhelmed and defeated

    God bringing us into a deeper realm of the Spirit

    God pouring out a spirit of prayer, miracles, gifts of the Spirit –  whatever comes with His manifest , awesome presence

    Salvations

    Holiness – along with a putting away of all that the Lord says is idolatry in our lives

    Grace and wisdom  for a situation He knew was coming up be we did not

    Breaking close friendship  ties with unsaved people and  those who say they are Christians but live in sin

    Breakthrough and growth (both natural and spiritual) in both our own lives and our church life

    A new burden for souls/evangelism

    Greater love for God and others

    Strong, new burdens (like fire shut up in our bones!) for  being and doing what the Lord has destined us to  be and to do , i.e., a long term, life plan calling for continued, committed  passion , faithfulness, and  enduring action

    A new desire to lay down our lives for the sake of the Lord, His kingdom and others as manifested in new, joyous giving in body, soul , and spirit.

    Overcoming besetting sins and  habits

    Deliverance from demons – in individuals, but also in churches, regions, nations, etc. – strongholds hindering the work of the Lord can be destroyed in a given area resulting in a great harvest of souls and revival among Christians

    Continued brokenness allowing the work of the cross to be embraced by us as well as our humbly seeing the need to walk in the Spirit  (thus manifesting His fruits) at all times

    New Faith and Hope

    Revival! The glory of the Lord in every aspect of our lives and in our local church and in the situations we prayed for

    GLORY!!!!!

    Continue to meditate on reasons, what happens while we fast, and the results of fasting.  Continue to look in Scripture for the reasons people fasted and the results of that fasting. Also, be aware of modern instances when someone (or a group) fasted – look for  their reasons and the results there too.  See if you  can add to the above list that I , Rosemary, made concerning fasting.

    Self examination:  As you see the intensity with which Biblical folks fasted, you have some ruler by which to measure your own intensity or lack thereof!

    Some Biblical examples of fasting – reasons, actions, results

    Fasting because people have gone astray and need to repent.  This fasting is a wake up call to being sober and obedient with God

    When we have a burden for a situation, the first act is to fast, and pray, and weep  --also to confess any sins. Then we get into action….

    Neh 1:2 That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.3 And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.4 And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted , and prayed before the God of heaven,5 And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments:6 Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned.

    We can include bringing God’s promises back to Him in our prayers:

    7 We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses.8 Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:9 But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.10 Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand.11 O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king's cupbearer.KJV          Nehemiah 9:1 On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and having dust on their heads.

    Why? They had just gone through a time of getting apathetic about God’s laws . Now they had been convicted that it was time to align themselves with God’s ways.

     

    Separation from the world:

    2 Those of Israelite descent had separated themselves from all foreigners.

    Confession of sin

     They stood in their places and confessed their sins and the wickedness of their fathers.

    Getting back into the Word:

     3 They stood where they were and read from the Book of the Law of the LORD their God for a quarter of the day, and spent another quarter in confession and in worshiping the LORD their God. 4 Standing on the stairs were the Levites-Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani and Kenani — who called with loud voices to the LORD their God. 5 And the Levites — Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah and Pethahiah — said: "

    They praised God Note the content so you can expand your praise language:

    Stand up and praise the LORD your God, who is from everlasting to everlasting."

    "Blessed be your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise. 6 You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them.     They pray that the Lord have mercy on them     

    32 "Now therefore, O our God, the great, mighty and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love, do not let all this hardship seem trifling in your eyes — the hardship that has come upon us, upon our kings and leaders, upon our priests and prophets, upon our fathers and all your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today. 33 In all that has happened to us, you have been just; you have acted faithfully, while we did wrong. 34 Our kings, our leaders, our priests and our fathers did not follow your law; they did not pay attention to your commands or the warnings you gave them. 35 Even while they were in their kingdom, enjoying your great goodness to them in the spacious and fertile land you gave them, they did not serve you or turn from their evil ways. 36 "But see, we are slaves today, slaves in the land you gave our forefathers so they could eat its fruit and the other good things it produces. 37 Because of our sins, its abundant harvest goes to the kings you have placed over us. They rule over our bodies and our cattle as they please. We are in great distress.

    38 "In view of all this, we are making a binding agreement, putting it in writing, and our leaders, our Levites and our priests are affixing their seals to it." NIV

    Effective fasting and repentance results in forsaking sin

    Neh 10:28 "The rest of the people — priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, temple servants and all who separated themselves from the neighboring peoples for the sake of the Law of God, together with their wives and all their sons and daughters who are able to understand —   29 all these now join their brothers the nobles, and bind themselves with a curse and an oath to follow the Law of God given through Moses the servant of God and to obey carefully all the commands, regulations and decrees of the LORD our Lord.

    No mixed marriages

    30 "We promise not to give our daughters in marriage to the peoples around us or take their daughters for our sons.

    No Sabbath breaking

    31 "When the neighboring peoples bring merchandise or grain to sell on the Sabbath, we will not buy from them on the Sabbath or on any holy day.

    We will give the land a rest as the Lord has directed in His Word

    Every seventh year we will forgo working the land and will cancel all debts.

    We will give to God’s house

    32 "We assume the responsibility for carrying out the commands to give a third of a shekel each year for the service of the house of our God: 33 for the bread set out on the table; for the regular grain offerings and burnt offerings; for the offerings on the Sabbaths, New Moon festivals and appointed feasts; for the holy offerings; for sin offerings to make atonement for Israel; and for all the duties of the house of our God. 34 "We — the priests, the Levites and the people — have cast lots to determine when each of our families is to bring to the house of our God at set times each year a contribution of wood to burn on the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the Law. 35 "We also assume responsibility for bringing to the house of the LORD each year the firstfruits of our crops and of every fruit tree. 36 "As it is also written in the Law, we will bring the firstborn of our sons and of our cattle, of our herds and of our flocks to the house of our God, to the priests ministering there. 37 "Moreover, we will bring to the storerooms of the house of our God, to the priests, the first of our ground meal, of our [grain] offerings, of the fruit of all our trees and of our new wine and oil. And we will bring a tithe of our crops to the Levites, for it is the Levites who collect the tithes in all the towns where we work. 38 A priest descended from Aaron is to accompany the Levites when they receive the tithes, and the Levites are to bring a tenth of the tithes up to the house of our God, to the storerooms of the treasury. 39 The people of Israel, including the Levites, are to bring their contributions of grain, new wine and oil to the storerooms where the articles for the sanctuary are kept and where the ministering priests, the gatekeepers and the singers stay.

    God exhorts the leaders and the people to return to Him  and show forth the sincerity of the heart with fasting, weeping, and mourning – then he says that perhaps He will relent of the punishments they deserve.  He also says there must be a GROUP FAST. Plus, He takes away every excuse that anyone may have to not participate.

    Joel 1:13 Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house of your God.14 Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the LORD your God, and cry unto the LORD,15 Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.KJV

    Joel 2:12'Even now,' declares the LORD, 'return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.' 13 Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. 14 Who knows? He may turn and have pity and leave behind a blessing — grain offerings and drink offerings for the LORD your God. 15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, declare a holy fast, call a sacred assembly. 16 Gather the people, consecrate the assembly; bring together the elders, gather the children, those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her chamber. 17 Let the priests, who minister before the LORD, weep between the temple porch and the altar. Let them say, 'Spare your people, O LORD. Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn, a byword among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, 'Where is their God?'' 18 Then the LORD will be jealous for his land and take pity on his people. 19 The LORD will reply to them: 'I am sending you grain, new wine and oil, enough to satisfy you fully; never again will I make you an object of scorn to the nations.

    Victory after the fast – fasting helps in warfare

    20'I will drive the northern army far from you, pushing it into a parched and barren land, with its front columns going into the eastern sea and those in the rear into the western sea. And its stench will go up; its smell will rise.' Surely he has done great things.   21 Be not afraid, O land; be glad and rejoice. Surely the LORD has done great things. 22 Be not afraid, O wild animals, for the open pastures are becoming green. The trees are bearing their fruit; the fig tree and the vine yield their riches. 23 Be glad, O people of Zion, rejoice in the LORD your God, for he has given you the autumn rains in righteousness. He sends you abundant showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before. 24 The threshing floors will be filled with grain; the vats will overflow with new wine and oil.

    25'I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten — the great locust and the young locust, the other locusts and the locust swarm— my great army that I sent among you. 26 You will have plenty to eat, until you are full, and you will praise the name of the LORD your God, who has worked wonders for you; never again will my people be shamed. 27 Then you will know that I am in Israel, that I am the LORD your God, and that there is no other; never again will my people be shamed.

    Victory in warfare – both spiritual and natural:

    Matt 4:1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." NIV

    Matt 17:19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting .KJV

    Samuel  told the people to fast and pray so that they would be delivered from the Philistines – note again the forsaking of sin along with the fasting

    1 Sam 7:3 And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.4 Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only.5 And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the LORD. 6 And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.7 And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.

    8 And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.

    9 And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him.

    10 And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel. KJV

     

    2 Chron 20::1 After this, the Moabites and Ammonites with some of the Meunites came to make war on Jehoshaphat. 2 Some men came and told Jehoshaphat, "A vast army is coming against you from Edom, from the other side of the Sea. It is already in Hazazon Tamar" (that is, En Gedi).   3 Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the LORD, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah. 4 The people of Judah came together to seek help from the LORD; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him.

    Praise is included in their warfare – praise can include telling God of His great deeds

    5 Then Jehoshaphat stood up in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem at the temple of the LORD in the front of the new courtyard 6 and said:

    "O LORD, God of our fathers, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you. 7 O our God, did you not drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham your friend?

    Warfare includes reminding God of His promises, i.e., we can use the “sword of the Spirit, the Word, in our warfare

    8 They have lived in it and have built in it a sanctuary for your Name, saying, 9'If calamity comes upon us, whether the sword of judgment, or plague or famine, we will stand in your presence before this temple that bears your Name and will cry out to you in our distress, and you will hear us and save us.' 10 "But now here are men from Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir, whose territory you would not allow Israel to invade when they came from Egypt; so they turned away from them and did not destroy them. 11 See how they are repaying us by coming to drive us out of the possession you gave us as an

    inheritance.

    Warfare includes our admitting we can do nothing without God’s help

    12 O our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you."

    Warfare involves EVERYONE being a part of the war effort

    13 All the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, stood there before the LORD. 14 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite and descendant of Asaph, as he stood in the assembly.

    God can give warfare strategies in the midst of the gathering of those crying out to Him

    15 He said: "Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the LORD says to you: 'Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's. 16 Tomorrow march down against them. They will be climbing up by the Pass of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the gorge in the Desert of Jeruel. 17 You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you.'"

    Responsive Worship and praise

    18 Jehoshaphat bowed with his face to the ground, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down in worship before the LORD. 19 Then some Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood up and praised the LORD, the God of Israel, with very loud voice.

    ACTION…FAITH CALLED FOR

    20 Early in the morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, "Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in the LORD your God and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful."

    Praise in the midst of the battle

    21 After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the LORD and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying: "Give thanks to the LORD, for his love endures forever."

    We may pray and fast in regard to seeking the Lord for the fulfillment of a prophetic word. We can also use that time to confess any sins that could hinder that word from being fulfilled.

    Dan 9: 1 In the first year of Darius son of Xerxes (a Mede by descent), who was made ruler over the Babylonian kingdom— 2 in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the LORD given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years. 3 So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes. 4 I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed:  "O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with all who love him and obey his commands, 5 we have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away from your commands and laws. 6 We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. 7 "Lord, you are righteous, but this day we are covered with shame — the men of Judah and people of Jerusalem and all Israel, both near and far, in all the countries where you have scattered us because of our unfaithfulness to you. 8 O LORD, we and our kings, our princes and our fathers are covered with shame because we have sinned against you. 9 The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him; 10 we have not obeyed the LORD our God or kept the laws he gave us through his servants the prophets. 11 All Israel has transgressed your law and turned away, refusing to obey you. "Therefore the curses and sworn judgments written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against you. 12 You have fulfilled the words spoken against us and against our rulers by bringing upon us great disaster. Under the whole heaven nothing has ever been done like what has been done to Jerusalem. 13 Just as it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us, yet we have not sought the favor of the LORD our God by turning from our sins and giving attention to your truth. 14 The LORD did not hesitate to bring the disaster upon us, for the LORD our God is righteous in everything he does; yet we have not obeyed him. 15 "Now, O Lord our God, who brought your people out of Egypt with a mighty hand and who made for yourself a name that endures to this day, we have sinned, we have done wrong. 16 O Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts, turn away your anger and your wrath from Jerusalem, your city, your holy hill. Our sins and the iniquities of our fathers have made Jerusalem and your people an object of scorn to all those around us. 17 "Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant. For your sake, O Lord, look with favor on your desolate sanctuary. 18 Give ear, O God, and hear; open your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears your Name. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. 19 O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act! For your sake, O my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name."

    20 While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel and making my request to the LORD my God for his holy hill— 21 while I was still in prayer, Gabriel, the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice. 22 He instructed me and said to me, "Daniel, I have now come to give you insight and understanding. 23 As soon as you began to pray, an answer was given, which I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed. Therefore, consider the message and understand the vision: NIV

    Fasting to show God how desperately serious we are for Him to hear our prayer to attend to our needs even if our crisis is our own fault (as in the case of David and Ninevah and Ahab)

    Est 3:12 Then on the thirteenth day of the first month the royal secretaries were summoned. They wrote out in the script of each province and in the language of each people all Haman's orders to the king's satraps, the governors of the various provinces and the nobles of the various peoples. These were written in the name of King Xerxes himself and sealed with his own ring. 13 Dispatches were sent by couriers to all the king's provinces with the order to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews — young and old, women and little children — on a single day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar, and to plunder their goods. 14 A copy of the text of the edict was to be issued as law in every province and made known to the people of every nationality so they would be ready for that day. 15 Spurred on by the king's command, the couriers went out, and the edict was issued in the citadel of Susa. The king and Haman sat down to drink, but the city of Susa was bewildered.

    Esther 4:1 When Mordecai learned of all that had been done, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the city, wailing loudly and bitterly. 2 But he went only as far as the king's gate, because no one clothed in sackcloth was allowed to enter it. 3 In every province to which the edict and order of the king came, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, weeping and wailing. Many lay in sackcloth and ashes. 4 When Esther's maids and eunuchs came and told her about Mordecai, she was in great distress. She sent clothes for him to put on instead of his sackcloth, but he would not accept them. 5 Then Esther summoned Hathach, one of the king's eunuchs assigned to attend her, and ordered him to find out what was troubling Mordecai and why.     Est 4:12 When Esther's words were reported to Mordecai {Mordecai had asked her to approach the king; Esther said she could be killed for doing that}, 13 he sent back this answer: "Do not think that because you are in the king's house you alone of all the Jews will escape. 14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father's family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?"

    15 Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: 16 "Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maids will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish." NIV

    David is another example of someone desperate for God to turn around a judgment against him so he fasted for his and Bathsheba’s baby to live: But, God said, “No”.

    2 Sam 12:19 David noticed that his servants were whispering among themselves and he realized the child was dead. "Is the child dead?" he asked. "Yes," they replied, "he is dead."

    David was soft and broken before the Lord in spite of the fact he did not get the response from God that he wanted. Perhaps the fasting helped him receive with meekness and peace the will of the Lord?

    20 Then David got up from the ground. After he had washed, put on lotions and changed his clothes, he went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request they served him food, and he ate.

    21 His servants asked him, "Why are you acting this way? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept, but now that the child is dead, you get up and eat!" 22 He answered, "While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, 'Who knows? The LORD may be gracious to me and let the child live.' 23 But now that he is dead, why should I fast ? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me."

    The Lord was gracious and granted them Solomon

    24 Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her and lay with her. She gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon. The LORD loved him; 25 and because the LORD loved him, he sent word through Nathan the prophet to name him Jedidiah.   ___________________________________________________________________

    Ninevah also had a judgment pronounced by God against her; however, fasting and repentance averted their judgment

    Jonah 3:1-Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: 2 "Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you." 3 Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very important city — a visit required three days. 4 On the first day, Jonah started into the city. He proclaimed: "Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned." 5 The Ninevites believed God. They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.

    6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. 7 Then he issued a proclamation in Nineveh: "By the decree of the king and his nobles:

    Do not let any man or beast, herd or flock, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. 8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. 9 Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish." 10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction he had threatened.

    Ahab was given a reprieve because he humbled himself and fasted:

    1 Kings 21: 20 Ahab said to Elijah, "So you have found me, my enemy!"

    "I have found you," he answered, "because you have sold yourself to do evil in the eyes of the LORD. 21'I am going to bring disaster on you. I will consume your descendants and cut off from Ahab every last male in Israel — slave or free. 22 I will make your house like that of Jeroboam son of Nebat and that of Baasha son of Ahijah, because you have provoked me to anger and have caused Israel to sin.' 23 "And also concerning Jezebel the LORD says: 'Dogs will devour Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.' 24 "Dogs will eat those belonging to Ahab who die in the city, and the birds of the air will feed on those who die in the country." 25(There was never a man like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the LORD, urged on by Jezebel his wife. 26 He behaved in the vilest manner by going after idols, like the Amorites the LORD drove out before Israel.)

    27 When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and fasted. He lay in sackcloth and went around meekly. 28 Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite: 29 "Have you noticed how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself, I will not bring this disaster in his day, but I will bring it on his house in the days of his son." NIV

    Worship, fasting , and prayer prepares us for revelation knowledge and it positions us to be one of the first to see God’s new moves

    Luke 2:36 There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem. NIV

    Fasting and prayer positions us to hear directives from the Lord

    Acts 13:1 In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." 3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. 4 The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus. NIV

     

    Acts 14:21 They preached the good news in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, 22 strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. "We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God," they said. 23 Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.NIV

     

    Deut 9: 9 When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that the LORD had made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water. 10 The LORD gave me two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God. On them were all the commandments the LORD proclaimed to you on the mountain out of the fire, on the day of the assembly.

    11 At the end of the forty days and forty nights, the LORD gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant.

    Fasting represents an attitude of humility as we seek God to supply our needs. It shows our dependence on Him and Him alone.

    Ezra 8:21 There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast , so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions. 22 I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, "The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him." 23 So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.   • sermons on practical life applications of "What is church" series

    Introduction: One of my heart cries when I was a college student was “How do I BE?”

    Examining what the Lord wants us to be and to do can bring us all a long way into “becoming”.  I.e., “becoming in an appropriate way for a Christian life”.

    That is why I see this series as so very vital.

    We are  focusing in on just portion  of the “What is Church?” series in this paper.

    In our taking a  magnifying glass on  just  a certain aspect of  this series, we cannot forget that our overal goal, i.e., the “big picture”,  is to grow up into Christ through learning Him and doing what we learn.

     The final HOPE and Vision that is the most important:  These individual sermons are simply parts of preparing for the coming of the Lord.

    WE are expecting Him to come back and we are passionately wanting to be totally prepared for His coming and being His bride whom He is pleased in!

    Everything we are dealing with on this particular paper has everything to do with reaching the FINAL goal!

    Col 3:1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

    Eph 4: 11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.     Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless

     

    As we thoroughly stay in tune with where we are at now and where we need to be, we need to always remember WHY we are examining our lives!!

    We are the members of the Bride of Christ making herself ready to meet the Bridegroom so we can be with Him forever in great joy!

    We need to avoid the deception of thinking we are “just fine” if we are not “Just fine”.

    If the Lord would write a letter to the “church at River of Life”, what would HE say is good and what would HE say is not good?

     

    Wednesday:  2 18 09:  Sermon: My personal Priorities:

    This series was started a month or so ago and it was in harmony with “What is church?” I am beginning to think I could spend a YEAR on this series….I said that I need more time and Robert said , “Why not?”  I know I need to be very sensitive to the Spirit on what to present each and every time I minister, so pray for me!  But, right now, I seem rather fixed on continuing to look at many aspects that evolved from the original sermon!

    1st sermon on a continuing basis:  Discussing again each priority.  In the 2nd sermon we will  Examine our personal priorities:

    I would like everyone…12 on up…to honestly evaluate their priorities and , please,  I would LOVE to have you personally email your responses.  There was a time at ROL that this whole discussion of “priorities” caused a big flap.  I think it is wise for all of us to re examine our priorities in this life regularly so that we can reorder our steps to conform to Godly priorities.

     What we SAY are our priorities because somehow we know it SOUNDS good, is often in direct conflict with what in fact are our obvious priorities.

    E.g., yesterday on “Ask the Pastor” when questions  regarding church attendance came in,  one pastor, Dr. Aikens, stated  it like this:

    If I were dating a young lady and her dad said I could see her 3x a week and over time I said things like : “This week I can only see you 2x because my buddies and I are watching TV sports on Friday night – guys only.  This week I can only see you 1x because I signed up for a weight lifting class for one year.   This week we will have to skip our time together because all week they are having special races at the race track that I want to watch.  And then gradually I saw her less and less, BUT, I still emailed her every few days saying, “I love you. You are the sunshine of my life.  I want us to be married one day”, would the young lady BELIEVE she is his # 1 person in his life?

    How I act and what I said are in conflict in the above illustration!

    Or, I can say I give FIRST to the kingdom of the Lord with my money; but, when I look at my giving amount and contrast it with my W-2 form, I obviously am NOT BEING what I SAID.

    I can say I love to be with the Lord alone, but, if I evaluate how much I actually do that, I see I am not being honest with myself.

    Priorities (in big numbers):   My , i.e., Rosemary’s , priorities (i.e., what I see to be the ideal)  are written below. My belief is that this is a pretty good numbering for all believers.  Every one of the  priorities  listed here could  be broken into their finer elements and dealt with thoroughly if we use this list to examine ourselves.

    1.    Personal relationship with God  (Includes devotional times ( e.g., worship, praise, prayer, Bible reading,  listening to Him, Journaling His communication with me, etc.), listening to Godly teaching, music, movies; reading  Godly material,  etc.

     

    As I started to look again at # 2, SO MUCH came to mind and that in itself turned into another sermon!!!  See below for that sermon which will occur , hopefully, sometime soon.

    2.    Family  His directives concerning my duties to my immediate family (including parents,  spouses, siblings that are still at home with me, grandparents)—this, I do not believe , extends to my cousins, aunts, uncles, etc.  ,i.e., as a priority before my local church as some have enough family to join in with to make a full time job!!! Put that down in 4 or 5! I.e., don’t miss church a whole bunch of times a  year for social events with extended family!  

    3.    My church  and related Body of Christ activities that the Lord is instructing me to be a part of  . # 3 should not fall very far behind # 2! All in church and in your family should be considered as family; it is your blood family to whom you are especially responsible physically and financially.   Matthew 12:46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you."   48 He replied to him, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers ?"  49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my=2 0brothers . 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."  Timothy 5:1 Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers , and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity. 3 Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need. 4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God”.              

     

    4.    My job (e.g., occupation,  homemaker,   homeschool teacher, my job can be that I am looking for a job too, chores my parents give me, etc.)  and/or my schooling

    5.     My personal life  (Grooming, recreation,  social events with friends and family, sports, music events, optional reading, exercise, etc.)

     

    sermon:   My priorities – a self examination – JUDGE YOURSELF!:

    1 Cor 11:27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. 31 But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. 32 When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world. NIV

     

    As you can see with any amount of reflections, all the above priorities overlap. Love of God and towards one another  is manifested in all the rest of the “categories” of your life!

    However, as best you can, create of method of judging and reporting on what appear to be your priorities at this point. You can use your calendar or your checkbook to tell you a LOT about yourself.  Or, you could spend a few days “observing” yourself and then evaluate yourself. (Actually, for the rest of our lives we need to evaluate constantly our priorities and be in constant “adjust to fit in with God’s  ways and plans ” mode!)

    You ask yourselves and add an explanation as to  why you choose to do the things you do when you report on what you do with your time .

    E.g, perhaps my motivation for looking at the Drudge Report a couple of times a day is for teaching , understanding, and prayer. Perhaps yours is simple curiosity and/or being caught up in a particular type of news that is actually vain. So it is not enough to answer,  “How do I spend my time , money , and energy ?” there is the deeper issue of WHY do I do that?  The goal is to discover what I really love FIRST .

    One person could go to grad school just out of competition with others; another goes to better support their family and/or to answer the call of the Lord concerning their particular destiny.  

    One person could be very conscious of their appearance from only pride (which includes competition) ; the other could have ministry or work roles that demand a certain kind of appearance.

    One person goes to each and every ball game they possibly can  because their god is sports; the other goes because they make a living as a coach.

    One person may spend a ½ or more on Facebook a day because they have an inordinate need to be popular with everyone ; another may use it as a ministry tool and  ongoing plan.

    Write your OWN analysis in your own way. Then take the above categories and be honest about what number you put on each one . If FIVE if FIRST , be honest!!! You can’t repent of anything until you face the problem!

    Note: If you personally do not agree with how I listed those priorities, feel free to rearrange them for yourself. I am very curious about whether you do that and what reasoning you put into that rearrangement.

    1 Cor 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.KJV

     

    Suggestion if you need it:  A possible way of managing this self evaluation:

    1. What do I spend time on regularly in a given day (or,  during each week, sometime during a month,  sometime during a year)? 

       This list could be very LONG. But only include the topic heading, e.g., “Getting ready to go outdoors every day “ – that includes bath, makeup, dressing, etc.Or “shopping for necessities” as one thing; :”shopping just to look for the fun of it” as another

    Or “food: preparation and eating time and clean up”  --Like I said: it could be a very long list.

    2. Make a list of the top 20 or so regular activities in your life and state why you do these things (unless it is a no brainer, e.g., I “eat”)..  . 

    3. Make a list of what you LOVE the most

    4. See if you can match # 2 & # 3 with the five categories I gave. Sometimes that love will fit in more than one category. E.g., “I love to get on Facebook” could correlate with “I love to pray for the needs of ROL folks and , therefore, I want to find out what is going on with them” would fit into social life and church life and , in some ways, your relationship with God. It’s “all good” as they say when what we do touches all of our priorities.

    5.  Deduct from # 4 what your priorities in fact are.

    6. Ask the Lord to reveal to you what does and does not please Him. Ask Him to show you in the Word why or why not His pleasure is or is not with you in these things.

     

    Making new priorities, where necessary,  to harmonize with God’s ways”

    1.  What should I love more and include more in my life?

    2. What do I love that I need to drop entirely because there is nothing in it that fits in with pleasing God?

    3..  What am I going to do about # 1 &#2?

    3. Make yourself a concrete PLAN as to how to CHANGE in order to please the Lord more!

    4. In your daily devotions keep your heart open to self evaluation and ready repentance when you see you have slipped back into living for yourself more than for the things that please and glorify the Lord.

     

    Another Sermon:  FAMILY:  A special concentration on # 3 right now – with an emphasis on Godly training (as opposed to the more practical aspects of family life):

     

    This INCLUDES that part of the survey that deals with family . Church and home should be closely intertwined.  Church attendance and activities  should be a primary family activity. Eg, like the feasts became both immediate family and the whole nation’s activity.

    Parents should NEVER be concerned about being accepted by their kids as “cool” or “fun”.  Parents  must set , role model, and enforce the standards.  Sometimes kids will manipulate by withholding affection and communication when they don’t like the parent’s choices . The kids need to understand that is exceedingly wicked!

    Someone also said at “Ask the Pastor” yesterday: “We used to  have parents with children, now we have children with parents”. I always use the expression “Don’t let the tail wag the dog”. We have far too many instances in which the kid’s need to be  entertained, amused, accepted, etc. takes priority over Godly priorities. The parents are in charge of ALL “extra curricular’ activities in the lives of their kids.  Kids are not to run the household!.  The parents will be accountable for how many times precious time was wasted on vanity when more valuable things for God’s kingdom could have been accomplished.

    FIRST we establish our family standards. Then, if the kids are content too and think of us as wonderful because they do recognize the value in those standards, all the better.

    Deut 11:16 Be careful, or you will be enticed to turn away and worship other gods and bow down to them. 17 Then the LORD's anger will burn against you, and he will shut the heavens so that it will not rain and the ground will yield no produce, and you will soon perish from the good land the LORD is giving you. 18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, 21 so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land that the LORD swore to give your forefathers, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth. NIV

    Deut 4:5 See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the LORD my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. 6 Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, "Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people." 7 What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to him? 8 And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today? 9 Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. 10 Remember the day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, when he said to me, "Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn to revere me as long as they live in the land and may teach them to their children." 11 You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain while it blazed with fire to the very heavens, with black clouds and deep darkness. 12 Then the LORD spoke to you out of the fire.     Deut 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.   5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

    Gen 18:16 When the men got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way. 17 Then the LORD said, "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? 18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him. 19 For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him." NIV

    Josh 1: 8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." NIV

    Ps 78:O my people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth. 2 I will open my mouth in parables,I will utter hidden things, things from of old — 3 what we have heard and known,what our fathers have told us. 4 We will not hide them from their children;

    we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD,his power, and the wonders he has done. 5 He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel,

    which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children, 6 so the next generation would know them,even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.

    Eph 6:4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. NIV

    Prov 30:17 The eye that mocks his father,And scorns obedience to his mother ,The ravens of the valley will pick it out,And the young eagles will eat it. NKJV

    Prov 31:1The words of King Lemuel, the utterance which his mother taught him: NKJV

    Prov 6:20My son, keep your father's command,And do not forsake the law of your mother .

    21 Bind them continually upon your heart;Tie them around your neck.22 When you roam, they will lead you;When you sleep, they will keep you;And when you awake, they will speak with you. 23 For the commandment is a lamp,And the law a light;Reproofs of instruction are the way of life, NKJV

    2 Tim 1: 5 when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.

     

    If  they are rebellious and worldly, there is nothing we can do to MAKE  their hearts right! We MUST teach, pray, discipline,  and enforce our standards as well as role model

    with JOY obedience to our Lord. 

    We ourselves  go to church with JOY. We  do not give in to their desire to be entertained in church or to be restless and running here and there during church.  We set standards and keep them. We do not care if they cry in their seat (quietly, else they need to be taken out) and perhaps they are embarrassed because we got after them  and “made them” settle down. We do not worry if some “false mercy” person thinks we are harsh. We are motivated by loving and obeying God and loving our child enough to bring them into proper behavior.

    We cannot reach into their soul and spirit and MAKE them WANT to  do right no more than Eli could . However, we CAN prevent them from DOING wrong in our domain.  E.g., Eli was punished because he only told his sons that what they were doing was wrong . He did not ENFORCE it. 

    1 Sam 2:12 Eli's sons were wicked men; they had no regard for the LORD. 13 Now it was the practice of the priests with the people that whenever anyone offered a sacrifice and while the meat was being boiled, the servant of the priest would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand. 14 He would plunge it into the pan or kettle or caldron or pot, and the priest would take for himself whatever the fork brought up. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh. 15 But even before the fat was burned, the servant of the priest would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, "Give the priest some meat to roast; he won't accept boiled meat from you, but only raw." 16 If the man said to him, "Let the fat be burned up first, and then take whatever you want," the servant would then answer, "No, hand it over now; if you don't, I'll take it by force." 17 This sin of the young men was very great in the LORD's sight, for they were treating the LORD's offering with contempt.   

    {RB Could we also rightfully say  that the Lord would be displeased when people treat worship, His gifts, His Word, the time of giving,  His people, etc. with contempt? Is it true that allowing our children to treat everything concerning church lightly sets them up as targets of God’s severe punishment?}

    |…………22 Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. 23 So he said to them, "Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours. 24 No, my sons; it is not a good report that I hear spreading among the LORD's people. 25 If a man sins against another man, God may mediate for him; but if a man sins against the LORD, who will intercede for him?" His sons, however, did not listen to their father's rebuke, for it was the LORD's will to put them to death.

    1 Sam 2:27 And there came a man of God unto Eli , and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh's house?28 And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel?

    29 Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?30 Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.31 Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father's house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house.32 And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever.33 And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age.34 And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them.  35 And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever.KJV

    1 Sam 3:11 And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.12 In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.13 For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.

    14 And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli , that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.15 And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision.

     

    Eli could have said, “But I TOLD them.” Telling was not enough!  He was supposed to RESTRAIN THEM.

    David had a problem with a son of his for that same reason:

     

    1 Kings 1:5 Now Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, put himself forward and said, "I will be king." So he got chariots and horses ready, with fifty men to run ahead of him. 6(His father had never interfered with him by asking, "Why do you behave as you do?" He was also very handsome and was born next after Absalom.) NIV

    BE a disciplinarian!!

    Prov 19:18 Discipline your son, for in that there is hope;do not be a willing party to his death.

    Prov 29:15 The rod of correction imparts wisdom,but a child left to himself disgraces his mother. NIV

     

    Jesus said he came to bring a sword; He is not about sinking to the “lowest common denominator” of spiritual involvement and interest in the household so that all is tolerated for the sake of peace with one another!

    Matt 10:32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword .35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. KJV

    What follows were some of the things concerning family in the survey:   And , YES, what is being stated will take TIME. Just as what is stated here takes TIME:

    But , we have taken what is a priority, i.e., our children and jumped to what is THEIR priority rather than what God tells us is to be the priority!!! We think taking them to a game or the beach or a movie or playing a board game together at home  is “quality family time” ABOVE when we take them to church or have a Bible study in our home. THAT speaks of OUR priorities in life. We need to adjust them.   Church and a family altar are FIRST ;  although, the other things listed are wonderful things to do together too if it is all done in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

    .        As parents, making sure respect for ROL is transmitted to your children. Doing this can include:

     Praying as a family for ROL pastors and leadership,

     reading the parts of the announcements that will include the whole family and then praying about those events as well as expressing enthusiasm for them.

     Making sure whatever critical thoughts are aired between the spouses and/or other adults in the household are not being done in front of the youth and children.

      Keeping diligently all the other points on this list {RB addition 2 17 09 THAT is part of our role modeling respect for our church in front of the kids. !!}

    .  Not letting the kids think their extra curricular activities are as important (God forbid, more important!) than their faithfulness to their local church!

        Making sure the children know that parents make tithing/ giving first and that the children are expected to tithe and give as well.

     Making sure children know to share their gifts in open pulpit. {RB addition 2 17 09: Make SURE your children know that every gift and talent they have was given to them by God to bless others. They need to know that these things are not done on a “I feel or don’t feel like it” basis! They are given as needed and/or requested.  Again: Parents must role model the same attitude.}

     Training children to be good ROL member in all the points listed here.

    Making church involvement obviously the next most important thing to God and immediate family involvement by role modeling this themselves!

     Making church a central social focal point .

     Making the ROL members important in the home by praying for them together as a family. Making sure they and the kids get enough rest before ROL services and/or special events.  Sharing current sermon or lesson material together as a family.

      Soliciting any questions the kids may have and together looking up answers in the Word. 

    Note on 2/17: The above are just the things I have thought of – perhaps you can think of more?

     

    Note:  For the 2/18 prayer time we will deal with the verses regarding family life and anything else both children and parents can think to pray regarding the home becoming more a Spirit filled and  Spirit led   home!
